Student iconoclast never sits in the same seat

Rob McDowell isn’t your typical UVU student: he has long hair, dislikes authority, and likes to make fellow students ‘think’ about things. One of the ways he does this is by sitting in a different seat every time he goes to his Psychology class. “I just want to make students think, you know?”, McDowell said.

Toolson gives back to the fan(s)

In a tribute to the fan(s), Ryan Toolson’s season total of 666 points matched the attendance over the season at the games. The 23.8 per game clip is great as far as scoring goes, but wasn’t quite the crowd level that Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen had hoped for.

UVU announces football team, snags legend

In a press conference last week, UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced that the Wolverines will begin playing football in 2011. After being in the shadows of the major universities in the state, UVU will begin the process of implementing a football team as soon as next year.

Park service extends elk hunting boundaries to include UVU campus

In a 7 vs. 2 vote last Friday, Utah Park Service officials announced that they have extended the boundaries of this year’s elk hunt to include parts of southwestern Orem and northern Provo. The decision largely hinged on two issues: persuading new hunters to join in helping thin the growing elk population and game dispersion over a few wide geographic areas in the former boundaries.

Peace and Justice Dialogue: Genocide

Each spring, Peace and Justice Studies hosts a conference on a timely and important topic. Last year’s conference, discussing the topic of nuclear weapons, drew more than 1,200 attendees. This year’s dialogue will discuss genocide prevention. Four of the world’s foremost genocide scholars will come to campus (the schedule can be viewed below; details and biographical information about the speakers included).

Track and Field facility being constructed

Construction has begun on the west side of campus for the new Hal Wing Track and Field Facility located north of the soccer fields. The $1.2 million project will be completed by fall 2009. It will have a 1,500 seating capacity for spectators to watch UVU’s track and field team compete.

First annual UVolunteer week to take place

As part of the clubs and organizations involved with the UVU service coalition, the first annual UVolunteer week will take place March 30 through April 4. “It is an effort to create more traditions at UVU, and especially to help students form a lifelong tradition of volunteering,” said Richard Portwood, president of UVU service council.

Brown holds a bachelor’s in counseling psychology and has completed one year of her master’s degree.
