As part of the clubs and organizations involved with the UVU service coalition, the first annual UVolunteer week will take place March 30 through April 4.

“It is an effort to create more traditions at UVU, and especially to help students form a lifelong tradition of volunteering,” said Richard Portwood, president of UVU service council.

With several activities taking place throughout the week, students can expect to find one that suits their needs or interests.

Monday will begin with a kick-off party from noon to 2 p.m. at Centre Stage and will feature live band, The Yarrow. Five-minute service projects will be available, along with food and prizes given out. Community organizations will also be at the event for students to learn about service opportunities in Utah county.

On Tuesday, LDSSA will be hosting humanitarian projects from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the Art Wall in the Sorenson Student Center. Later that evening, the Tennis Club is putting on an Adopt-A-Grandparent event at 6 p.m.

A blood drive will take place on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ballroom Commons.

Thursday will feature a “Soup”posium soup night at 6 p.m. in the Grande Ballroom and is put on by the student public relations firm and UVU clubs. Brent Crane, the executive director of the Food and Care Coalition will be the keynote speaker. Soup, bread and drinks will be served for $3 if tickets are bought at Campus Connection, and $5 at the door. All proceeds go to the Food and Care Coalition.

On Friday, CAL and the UVU Service Council are helping put on a carnival for children with disabilities at the Dan Peterson School in American Fork. The Field Day takes place from noon to 3 p.m. with a shuttle leaving every hour starting at 11:30 to take students back and forth from campus to the school.

Those wanting to participate in the Adopt-A-Grandparent, blood drive, or the Dan Peterson Field Day can sign up in SC 101.

Saturday wraps up the UVolunteer Week with an Adopt-A-Highway clean-up put on by UVUSA and Kappa Sigma. The clean up starts at 8 a.m. and will meet at Lakeside Park at 400 S. and Geneva Road in Orem to clean the two-mile stretch on Geneva Road. Breakfast will be served for participants.

“We understand that students are busy, however the time they will spend serving is beyond rewarding,” Portwood said. “The greatest service you can give yourself is service to others.”
