Dental hygiene students take first place for smoking research

A team of Utah Valley University dental hygiene students recently received first-place honors for their research and presentation on third-hand smoke at the annual Utah Dental Association convention in Salt Lake City. Each year, dental hygiene schools across the state compete for honors at the conference through their respective table clinic presentations on various topics in oral health.

Students donate to save classmates

Due to state budgetary cuts, more than 230 UVU student financial scholarships will be sacrificed. In response, the UVU Student Alumni Board (SAB) is asking for every student on campus to donate $1 in order to keep their classmates in school. The “Giving of the Green” campaign, which began March 9 and will continue through March 17, has set up donation tables around campus.

Building the largest geometric structure

Several students gathered in the Sorenson Student Center last week as faculty members from the math department assisted students in building the Zome. The Zome, a multicolored structure consisting of interlocking sticks, and which in its finished state is a four-dimensional sphere, requires its builders to think strategically and in a pattern.

Suggestion: An extremely common suggestion for the Education Building is to bring in some kind of food cart that provides healthier food options for students to purchase. Reply: It has been recognized by the administration and food services that there is a need for better food options in the Education Building.

Talking with Tanya

Tanya Brown, the ex sister-in-law of O.J. Simpson, recently spoke on campus about domestic violence prevention. Brown holds a bachelor’s in counseling psychology and has completed one year of her master’s degree. Turkmen leaders visit Utah

Five government leaders from the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan came to Utah in the first week of March to examine the U.S. audit system. They came as part of UVU’s Office of International Affairs & Diplomacy who hosted the delegation for OpenWorld.

Wolverine Hero Spotlight – Trevor Tooke, UVUSA President-elect

Trevor Tooke, a junior majoring in business management, was recently elected as Student Body President for the 2009-2010 school year. Tooke, a native of Utah County, said that his favorite part of campaigning was being able to talk to the students and see them get excited about having a voice.

New UVU President announced

After months of searching and interviews of more than 46 applicants, Matthew S. Holland was chosen as the next president of UVU. He will assume his presidential duties on July 1, 2009. What does this new president mean for students? “Students can expect great involvement in student activities from him,” said Jed Pitcher, chair of the presidential search committee.

Embracing individual differences

The Body Image Fair was held in the Hall of Flags Feb. 25 through Feb. 26 in an effort to raise awareness in regards to physical well-being and healthy self-perception. The fair was largely produced by Pilar Steele, a BYU graduate who is now interning in the UVU Student Health services department.

UVoice wins student elections

Filling the gaps

During a recent visit to the Food Bank, one volunteer noted that the shelves were nearly empty. In response, the health club teamed up with the Health Education Association of Utah (HEAU) to collect canned, boxed and dry products, as well as items such as diapers and toothpaste to donate to the Utah Food Bank and Community Action Services of Utah.

Institute talent show

2/20/09- The Orem LDS Institute of Religion adjacent to the UVU Campus held a talent show on Friday evening called: “An Evening on Broadway.” Students performed scenes from Wicked, My Fair Lady, High School Musical, Les Miserables and others. Popular Broadway songs were sung and performed instrumentally, such as a rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow played on an upside-down violin, as well as Chopsticks, performed by Ellen Amatangelo & Josh Sackett.
