BACA: the keepers of the children

Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) gave a well-attended presentation in the UVU Grande Ballroom on March 31 in an effort to raise awareness regarding issues of violence and neglect towards children. BACA was established by John Paul Chief Lilly, a licensed clinical social worker, play therapist and part-time faculty member at Brigham Young University.

Preparing for earthquakes

Citing the anniversaries of powerful Utah earthquakes in Ogden (May 1914) and Kosomo (March 1934), Govorner John Huntsman has declared April 2009 to be “Earthquake Preparedness Month.” Utah’s rich history of earthquakes from St. George to the Idaho border is reason enough to be prepared, and Huntsman said the prospect of a major earthquake keeps him up at night.

Giving of the Green campaign results

The Student Alumni Board (SAB) initiated the “Giving of the Green” campaign in response to state budgetary cuts, which previously provided tuition scholarship aid to UVU students. The campaign raised approximately $1,400. DigiCert, a local website security company in Lindon, offered to match the student donations.

Hitch’s say on budget cuts

The following letter was sent as an e-mail to UVU employees on March 29 regarding budget cuts: Dear UVU employee, At long last, the 45-day legislative session has concluded. On the positive side, UVU received $2.8 million for planning money for the Science building addition (hurray!) and some one-time federal stimulus targeted funding.

Sigma Alpha Lambda holds Pass It On event

Jake Davenport, president of UVU Sigma Alpha Lambda and Taylor Hullinger, former president of the club are hosting a Pass It On film screening in recognition of the second anniversary of Pass It On Day, April 25, 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Pass It On is a motivational movie which presents how action behind the attraction can make dreams come true.

Mr. UVU 2009 crowned

Spencer Dahl was named the winner of the Pirate themed Mr. UVU pageant last week. Dahl fought off eleven other contestants for the title, showing off their talents, swimsuits and evening-wear. Dahl, 24, is an undeclared major at UVU. His hobbies include football, baseball, snowboarding, cheer/stunting, reading and learning.

“Humanizing the Other:” Genocide Dialogue Focuses on Prevention

The 2009 J. Bonner Richie Dialogue on Peace and Justice, held this year at the new library March 23- 24, focused on genocide. Lecturers spoke on the atrocities of the Holocaust, the genocides that have occurred and are occurring in African nations, and how to prevent them from happening again.

LDS President to address UVU grads, receive honorary degree

LDS Pres. Thomas S. Monson is set to address the 2009 class during the 68th graduation ceremony to be held May 1 in the McKay Center. Pres. Monson, along with his wife Frances and long-time friend of UVU Phyllis Christensen, will be presented with honorary degrees at the main commencement ceremony.

CAMPUS NEWS ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS ENERGY ALTERNATIVES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY- In its 22nd year, the annual symposium on environmental ethics will take place April 1-2 in LI 120. This event is free and open to the public. April 1 will feature the topic “The Future of Non-conventional (wind, solar and geothermal) Energy Sources” organized by Phil Matheson, Chair of the UVU Physics Department.
