The UVU Review ("we," "us," or "our") is the independent, student-operated news publication of Utah Valley University (UVU), located in Orem, Utah. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you visit https://www.uvureview.com (the "Site").

By using the Site you agree to the practices described in this Policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Site.

2.1 Information You Provide

• Comments & Letters: Name, email address, and any content you submit through comment forms or tip submissions.
• Contact Forms: Name, email, phone number, and the message you send.
• Newsletter Sign-ups: Email address and any preferences you indicate.
• Account Registration: Username, email address, and optional first/last name when you create a reader account.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

• Log Data: IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, and timestamps.
• Cookies & Tracking Technologies: We and our third-party partners use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies. See Section 4 for details.
• Analytics: We use Google Analytics (or a privacy-preserving alternative) to understand aggregate site traffic. This data is anonymized and not linked to individual identities.

2.3 Information From Third Parties

Our Site may embed content or features from YouTube, Spotify, and social media platforms. Those services may collect data according to their own privacy policies when you interact with embedded content.

We use the information we collect to:

• Operate, maintain, and improve the Site;
• Respond to your comments, questions, and requests;
• Send newsletters or editorial updates (only where you have opted in);
• Monitor and analyze usage trends to improve reader experience;
• Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents;
• Comply with applicable legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your personal information for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

We use the following categories of cookies:

• Strictly Necessary: Required for the Site to function (session management, security).
• Functional: Remember your preferences (e.g., dark mode, comment name).
• Analytics: Aggregate, anonymized usage statistics. No personal profiles are built.

You can manage your cookie preferences at any time via our Privacy Choices page or through your browser settings. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share information in limited circumstances:

• Service Providers: Hosting, analytics, and email delivery providers acting on our behalf under data processing agreements.
• Legal Requirements: If required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or to protect the safety of any person.
• Journalistic Purpose: As a news organization, we may publish information that is newsworthy and in the public interest. We follow the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics in making such decisions.

If you are a Utah resident, you may have certain rights under the Utah Consumer Privacy Act (Utah Code Ann. § 13-61-101 et seq.), effective December 31, 2023:

• Right to Know: You may request confirmation of whether we process your personal data and request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Right to Delete: You may request deletion of personal data you have provided to us (subject to certain exceptions, including journalistic and educational purposes).
• Right to Portability: Where applicable, you may request your personal data in a portable, machine-readable format.
• Right to Opt Out: You have the right to opt out of the sale of personal data and targeted advertising. We do not sell your personal data or use it for targeted advertising.

To exercise these rights, please contact us with "UCPA Privacy Request" in your message. We will respond within 45 days (extendable by an additional 45 days with notice). We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

Note on Journalistic Exemption: The UCPA does not apply to personal data processed solely for journalistic, editorial, or news-gathering purposes by a news organization. Some of the data we collect and maintain may fall within this exemption.

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Policy, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Comment data is retained as part of our published record; you may request removal by contacting us.

The Site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. However, no transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

The Site may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to review their privacy policies.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the Site following changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.
