But if you were born in a barn, here’s what you’ve been missing. Not only has the Utah Valley community been fortunate enough to have a Minor League baseball team playing nearby, it has one of the best and most consistent teams to boot.

Lance is back The most widely known name in cycling, Lance Armstrong, has announced in an online article for Vanity Fair that he will be coming out of retirement to race in the 2009 Tour de France. In need of resuscitation, the sport of cycling in general will benefit from Armstrong’s return.
In the third and deciding game of the heated playoff series between instate foes the Orem Owlz staved off elimination by knocking off the pesky Ogden Raptors 9-7 Monday night behind Luis Jimenez’s five RBIs. With the win the Owlz moved on to face the Great Falls Voyagers in the Pioneer League Championship series.
Women’s soccer opened their field to start season play on Saturday against North Dakota. Shantea Adams-Yeats scored a low roller in the right corner of the goal, to give the Wolverines the lead and set the tone of the game early.
Utah Valley women’s volleyball team starts the season off 0-2 after losing both of their matches at the Utah Invitational. The first match was against the University of Utah and the Wolverines fell 3-0 (19-25, 10-25, 22-25). The second was closer, against University of California-Santa Clara, but they just could not close it out, losing in five, 2-3 (18-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 0-15).

Ohio State nightmare
As the college football season kicks off, the debate as to who will win the Heisman Trophy is already in full force. One candidate, Beanie Wells of Ohio State, sent a shiver through the spines of Buckeye fans everywhere when he fell to the turf with a foot injury at his team’s opening-week win over Youngstown State.

A sputtering Yugo finds itself too far behind to make up ground when drag racing a Ferrari. So, Utah Valley University’s women’s soccer team has pounced out of the gate early in the 2008 season.

UVU cross country fares well in season opener Utah Valley’s men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second and third respectively as they began the 2008 season at the Idaho State Invitational Saturday morning. “It was a pretty good day for us overall,” head cross-country coach Scott Houle said.
A blazing 96 degrees and a crowd dying of heat didn’t stop the Wolverines from defeating Dixie State. After a hard fought first half both teams went into half time scoreless. “In the first half we were a little sluggish,” UVU head coach Brent Anderson said.
At the end of last season, the UVU women’s soccer team flexed its muscle in finishing off a tough season by winning the United Soccer tournament championship. The special thing about last season is that there wasn’t a single senior on the team, and this year that will pay dividends.
For years the Utah Valley University track and field team hasn’t been able to practice on campus or hold its own meets. For years the Wolverines have had to rent time on a track at Mountain View High School in Orem. But that won’t be the case for long. Last Monday, UVU Athletic Director Mike Jacobsen announced at student athlete orientation that construction on a new track facility would start in the spring.
Owlz continue to fight for a playoff position and are showing no sign of slowing their pace.
