Injury bug deflating Jazz playoff hopes

With Deron Williams sidelined by a sprained ankle, the Utah Jazz got off to a modest start this season. When Carlos Boozer landed awkwardly on his left knee, fans began to worry, and now that Andrei Kirilenko has been sidelined with injury, the season appears to be lost.

Flash look to make run as season winds down

At Utah Valley University, many may not know that there is a semi-pro basketball team playing at the McKay Events Center. The Utah Flash is a developmental basketball team whose NBA affiliates are the Utah Jazz and the Boston Celtics. After 22 games in their season, the Utah Flash are 13-9 and sitting in third place in the Western Division behind the Bakersfield Jam and the first place Idaho Stampede.

Beckham hopes to make AC Milan permanent David Beckham is currently under contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy but is on loan to AC Milan. However, Beckham is enjoying his time in Italy so much that he wants to stay with AC Milan permanently. Milan’s vice president said he is willing to pay a fee in order to keep Beckham.

Wolverines earn tough win over Weber State

Three of UVU’s top players shelled out double-digit points Tuesday to get a win over Weber State. It wasn’t an easy win for the Wolverines but they did the job and put the points on the board that they needed. Sandy Wall, Robyn Fairbanks and Julie McMurray put together a total of 63 points for their 81-73 win.

UVU evens record at NDSU The Utah Valley University men’s basketball team dropped to 8-8 on the year Tuesday after a 71-98 loss at North Dakota State (13-5). NDSU is the current leader of the Summit League. Senior guard Ryan Toolson led the Wolverines with 27 points on the night and chipped in three rebounds and three assists.

After two months of play the UVU men’s basketball team sits at 8-8 with a month remaining in the teams 2008-09 campaign. Heading into the season the Wolverines appeared to be a possible 20-win team. As that goal appears bleak the question remains as to whether the team has underachieved so far.

Flash defeat D-Fenders

The Los Angeles D-fenders couldn’t quite pull off any defense against Andre Ingram in the McKay Center last week. Ingram put 55 percent of his shots in the basket and contributed 17 points in the second half alone. Flash head coach Brad Jones said, “Andre has had some ups and downs this season, but he has always been a terrific shooter.

Fairbanks leads team effort in win

Denver University simply could not survive. Especially when the Wolverines shot 56.4 percent from the field, a season-high 26 assists and 31 made field goals to give UVU two straight wins for the first time this season. Denver came out early with the hot hand, but the Wolverines played tight defense.

UVU’s Julie McMurray enjoys breakout season

Three-pointers are the name of the game for UVU’s own number 3, Julie McMurray. Currently averaging 19 points per game, McMurray hits three-pointers like Ryan Toolson hits free throws. McMurray, a junior studying P.E. teaching and exercise science, is referred to as the ‘hustle’ of the team.

Jeff Kent Retires Jeff Kent is hanging up his baseball cleats after a 17-year stint in Major League Baseball. Kent hit 377 total home runs and an MLB record 351 as a second baseman during the years he spent playing for the Blue Jays, Mets, Indians, Giants, Astros, and Dodgers.

Wolverines can’t find rhythm in loss

The UVU men’s basketball team had three players score in double digits, but ultimately fell to the Mavericks of the University of Texas at Arlington, 75-64. Senior guard Ryan Toolson led all Wolverines with 17; senior center Brett Ravenberg set a new season high with 10 points, and sophomore forward Justin Baker had 10 points off the bench.

BCS champs; not national champions

Florida’s Urban Meyer was given a Gatorade shower after his team won the BCS title game last week. Tim Tebow, Florida’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, sat at the pulpit following the game and declared his team the number one team in the nation. While that statement may be true, it’s definitely not undisputed.

Intramurals Offers a Variety of Recreational Sports

Intramurals is a word many students don’t immediately associate with sports, or even know the definition of. Webster’s Dictionary defines intramurals as recreational sports organized within a school. The term originates from the words intra muros meaning inside the walls, indicating that games are conducted between members of the same school.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush undergoes surgery New Orleans Saints running back and former USC standout Reggie Bush underwent knee surgery after being placed on injured reserve in mid-December. Bush is expected to be ready for minicamp in June after several months of rehabilitation.
