Spring is just around the corner and that means many great things are in store for Utah Valley University — sunshine, warm weather and the start of the UVU baseball season. After five years as an assistant, Eric Madsen is set to start his first season as the Wolverines head coach.
Fairbanks Gets 1,000th Rebound in Final Road Game Robyn Fairbanks became the first Utah Valley player to reach 1,000 career rebounds in the Wolverines’ (13-10) 90-75 loss at North Dakota State on Monday night. She entered the game needing eight rebounds to reach the mark and got number 1,000 with 1:25 left in the first half.
Having been ravaged by injuries this season, the Utah Jazz finally appear to make a run with a clean bill of health. While it will take Jazz forward Carlos Boozer a few games to get his legs under him, just having him in the lineup has been refreshing to Jazz players and fans alike.
Leipheimer wins third straight The recent conclusion of the Tour of California ended up with American Levi Leipheimer attaining his third straight victory in the event. He defeated Utah native David Zabriskie by a large margin of 36 seconds. Leipheimer took the yellow jersey on stage two after a breakaway ride where he finished second, but gave him the overall lead.
Dick Hunsaker is the head coach of the UVU men’s basketball team. In his seven seasons as the Wolverines’ head coach, Hunsaker has posted an impressive 134-68 record. A telling example of Hunsaker’s success was the 2001 University of Utah basketball team.
In last Tuesday’s win over Chicago State students in the MAWL came dressed as their favorite superheroes.
The women’s basketball team returned home last week after a four-game road trip. On the road they picked up two wins and suffered two losses. Their road trip began in New Jersey against NJIT on Feb. 12 when they picked up a big 70-58 win. This win continued their winning streak bringing it to six straight games.
The Wolverine wrestling team ended their 2008-09 season with a win, a school record. UVU performed a classic beating against the Air Force Academy 36-6. UVU also broke the school record for the most wins in a season with 11. The team managed to win eight of the 10 total bouts against Air Force.
The University of Wyoming broke a ten-match win streak last Friday against the Wolverines, 21-15, in front of a full crowd. The Wolverines are now 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference, but still have reason to rejoice with a roster full of freshman and sophomores that are likely to improve with time.
McPherson Named GWC Male Track & Field POW Michael McPherson, a freshman (Parker, Colo./Chaparral HS) on Utah Valley University’s men’s track and field team, has been named the Great West Conference Male Indoor Track and Field Athlete of The Week, as announced by league officials Tuesday.
Utah Valley basketball will look to make a splash this off-season with several players who could be playing professional basketball next year. And one in particular has been considered as one of the top senior prospects in the country. If you were thinking Ryan Toolson, leading scorer for the men’s basketball team, you would be off the mark.
McGrady likely done for the season The Houston Rockets were supposed to make a run in the Western Conference after acquiring bad-boy Ron Artest during the off-season. That doesn’t look to be the case as Tracy McGrady has announced that he will miss the remainder of the season with knee problems that will require microfracture surgery.
The Wolverines wrapped up their last road trip of the season winning two out of the three games they played. Winning two of three is quite an accomplishment considering the Wolverines have had trouble on the road all season long. The wins give Utah Valley a 4-7 record on the road and a 14-10 overall record on the season.
Utah Valley University’s softball team opened its season with a win, 6-5, over in-state rival Southern Utah at the Red Desert Classic in St. George. The Wolverines played five big name teams and won against two. This year Wolverine softball will be fun to watch.
Utah Valley recently had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Ohio University despite another fantastic performance from Robyn Fairbanks. The senior poured in 32 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the loss. After the lady Wolverines got out to a sluggish start to the 2008-09 season they have come together to rival last seasons record, which was the best in the programs short Division I history.
