Project team looks for water on tribal land in Mexico

A recent article in National Geographic discusses an Indian tribe called the Tarahumara who are located in the Sierra Tarahumara Mountains, near Copper Canyon in northern Mexico, and a plan that some private investors have to build a resort over a section of the tribal land.

Pre-law students better prepared for the beyond

The Pre-Law Club just had their biannual Dean’s Night on Oct. 21. Nearly a hundred pre-law students attended the two-hour event. They were able to interact with law school deans who were there to answer their various questions and help them decide on what law schools would benefit them most.

Uchtdorf advises honesty in a globalizing world

During the life of President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, the world consisted of division and walls. Cultures and ideas remained hidden until the fall of the Berlin Wall. But today, Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said a world that was once isolated is now integrated.

Soccer official assists students in car accident after soccer game

Minutes following the women’s soccer game Oct. 23, the crowd was left at a standstill after witnessing a car collision and a referee who rushed to the scene. The EMT certified soccer referee heard the accident then ran to aid the two cars that collided on College Drive west of the soccer field.

National Debt Clock runs out of digits

The United States National Debt Clock in Times Square has recently run out of digits to display the nation’s increasing debt. The clock can no longer accommodate the amount of money that America is borrowing. The digital dollar sign has been replaced with the numeral one necessary for the roughly $10.

The Clothesline Project breaks the silence

The sound of a gong, then silence, a whistle blows, and more silence, a loud ringing of a bell, more silence. Each of these sounds is an auditory reminder of the violence that occurs daily in our community. The gong, played every 10 to 12 seconds, indicated that a woman in the United States had just been assaulted.

Blood battle between schools

In an effort to stimulate blood donation among Utah college students, in addition to meet record-high demand, the American Red Cross has teamed up with UVU volunteers and pitted them against the similarly equipped Weber State in an epic “Blood Battle” between the state’s two newest universities to see which will donate more blood.

Call for proposals

This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration will focus on civil rights. The Commemoration Advisory Board is now accepting proposals for the celebration. The primary focus for the proposals should be able to expand into civil rights issues. Accepted proposals will be incorporated into the Martin Luther King Jr.

Fire engine donated to UFRA

The Utah Fire and Rescue Academy has a new team member. It comes in the form of a 1986 FMC fire engine that the Layton City Fire Department donated on the 13th of this month. When Layton’s Fire Department recently purchased new firefighting equipment, they decided to donate the sleek red machine to the Emergency Services Department at UVU instead of selling it to another fire department in the area.

When opportunity knocks

The Entrepreneur’s Club is participating in the annual Opportunity Quest business plan competition, which offers prizes up to $3,000 for finalists, who then go to the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge competition to compete for up to $40,000 in prize money. “You learn more about writing a business plan by doing a competition than by reading a bunch of books,” said Pete Robinson, entrepreneurship professor and mentor for the E-Club.
