Arthur Laffer visits UVU

Arthur Laffer, a prominent economist during the Regan administration, spoke to a group of about 200 students last Wednesday about the current economic climate. Following a long history of U.S. economic policy, Laffer reveled in his memories working with Reagan, calling him, “The only real president,” while tapping on his chest and swooning, “Ah, Ronny.

UVU’S PBL STUDENTS WIN AT STATE For the second year in a row, Utah Valley University’s Phi Beta Lambda won the traveling trophy for the most awards won with 47 and was named the Most Outstanding Chapter at the annual Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference held April 3-4 in Ogden.

April 2nd – Theft – A wallet was stolen from the men’s PE locker room. April 6th – Man with gun – UVU Police responded to the Liberal Arts building on a report of a male that had reportedly dropped a weapon which had been in his backpack, and then picked it up and returned it to his bag.

Prove renting tightens up

On March 24, 2009 the Provo Municipal Council met to discuss a number of issues including zoning laws in Provo, specifically R1 zones with an A and S overlay. According to the minutes, the Council wants to redefine the terms owner-occupant, primary residence and trust.

The Library of Congress Junior Fellows internship program brings together a variety of talented and highly qualified college students from around the country. The 2009 intern class will include UVU’s own Carol Acevedo. She will be the first student from UVU to have an internship with the Library of Congress.

UVU alumnus wins money on “Millionaire” game show

UVU alumnus Shannon Young won $16,000 playing “Who wants to be a Millionaire,” which aired Wednesday April 8 on NBC. Young, a 2008 graduate and valedictorian of the Integrated Studies program, will be using the money to start graduate school at BYU in the fall where she will be studying social work.

Major changes to take place in the business department

Sometimes change is positive, sometimes it’s not. For the Woodbury School of Business, change has meant the reduction of some of its program features due to budget cuts, but also has meant a new minor, new MBA program and more office space in the near future.

Benefit comedy night with Boys and Girls Club

Comedy Sportz is collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club of Utah County for a one-night comedy benefit. The event will be at Comedy Sportz in Provo, April 22 beginning at 8 p.m. “The Comedy Sportz benefit night is a great opportunity for everyone to support the Boys & Girls Clubs while enjoying great company and fabulous comedy,” said David Bayles, executive director of the club.

Insects collected for biology program

Six UVU students, biology lab manager Melissa Monk and Dr. Wayne Whaley from the UVU Biology Department traveled to St. George, Utah, April 3 to collect insects for use by the department. UTA begins service to Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs

Utah Transit Authority is broadening its routes and accessibility by offering a new express route from Eagle Mountain through Saratoga Springs to Salt Lake City. Express route 806 started service on April 6, 2009, and is part of the service now being offered to the area after Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs voted to join UTA’s service district in the 2008 general election.

Orrin Hatch visits campus

Sen. Orrin Hatch visited campus April 10 to discuss the passing of the Serve America Act. The bill amends the National and Community Service Act of 1990, expanding opportunities for service. The bipartisan bill was sponsored by Sen. Kennedy (D, MA) and co-sponsored by 18 others.

A year’s hard work commended

In recognizing the endeavors of students, faculty, organizations and friends of UVU, the Wolverine Achievement awards were presented for the past year’s efforts. Fourteen awards were given out for contributions to the campus and community. Three nominated finalists were named in each category and narrowed to one winner at the awards ceremony.

Tuition on the rise

The Utah State Board of Regents has recently announced a two-tier increase in tuition for all state-funded colleges and universities the 2009-2010 school year. University spokesperson Chris Taylor said the total dollar amount to increase for UVU students based on full-time enrollment is $276 for an entire school year or $138 per semester.
