Utah Valley University’s women’s soccer tema was on the short end of a 1-0 contest today. The game against Drake University in tournament play at Portland State was the second straight loss for the lady Wolverines.

Drake’s goal was scored by senior Ashlie Stokes with assistance on the tally from Kylie DeHaven and Spencer Vasey at the 2:29 mark. Marking the first goal of the season for the Bulldogs since in their first game of the tournament they were held scoreless by Boise State.

The Bulldogs keeper, Kylynn Moyer, dug in defensively following her team’s goals. Holding off the Wolverines in the initial stanza, despite being outshot 6-3. UVU continued to pepper the Drake defense over the final 45 mintues registering a 10-2 margin in shots. Moyer stayed strong and prevailed to notch the shutout.

With just over a minute remaining the lady Wolverines had one last shot to get an equalizer. Lexi Robinson took the shot but her attempt from 13 yards out sailed high. In the end UVU out shot the Bulldogs with totals of 16-5 and 5-2 respectively. It just wasn’t enough to bypass Drake’s defense.

The lady Wolverines head back to Utah to start their home campaign; playing their next seven games on Clyde Field in Orem. The 2014 home opener will be Friday, August 29 vs. Baylor at 7:30 pm MT.
