Wolverines get one win in doubleheader

The lady Wolverines took on in-state rival Utah State last Tuesday for a doubleheader taking game one, but letting game two slide. Game one started with Utah State stepping up to bat first and scoring a quick two runs as the Wolverines followed with one run in the first inning and sophomore Megan Woodworth hitting a home run to get the game going.

Fairbanks Named Honorable Mention AP All-American Utah Valley University senior Robyn Fairbanks has received honorable mention All-America recognition by the Associated Press, it was announced on Tuesday. It’s the second consecutive year that she has garnered the honor.

Thunder pick up first win over New Mexico

The Utah Valley Thunder picked up their first franchise win after coming back from a 12-point deficit and scoring 32 unanswered points, leaving the New Mexico Wildcats in the dust, 55-34 in the McKay Events Center. The Thunder found that they were in a hole early, but managed to dig out starting with defense, headed by veteran Antar Brame and rookie Duane Paul, which halted the Wildcats’ air attack.

Thunder struck in season opener

The Utah Valley Thunder, Utah County’s new indoor football team, began its inaugural season against the Wyoming Cavalry last week. The Thunder hung with the Cavalry nearly the whole game, but found down the stretch that in arena football, things can change in a matter of seconds.

Many bumps in the road for UVU

As of March 26, the men’s baseball team is 6-14 on the season and has lost 10 of their last 11 games. It seems to have been a rough road trip for the Wolverines. The road trip started in Washington against Gonzaga, where the Wolverines struggled to get any momentum.

Todd Fairbourne, who is in his 11th year as the head softball coach at UVU, has brought success to the Wolverine’s program. Before Utah Valley made the jump to Division I competition, Fairbourne helped guide UVU to the schools only national championship while competing in the junior college ranks.

Fairbanks Named Independent Player of the Year for Third Time Coaches and sports information directors at 14 independent schools have named Utah Valley University’s Robyn Fairbanks both the Division I Independent Player of the Year and as a selection to the All-Independent first team.

NFL wants to play more NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is proposing a plan to NFL owners to raise the amount of games in a regular season from 16 to 17 or 18 games. The proposal would also make it so there are fewer preseason games. Goodell said that the league does not need four exhibition games anymore.

Softball rundown

With the first half of the women’s softball season complete, the Wolverines 2009 season sits at 10-15. UVU began the LMU Invitational at the beginning of this month. This invitational will take them through the remainder of their season, which will go through the end of this semester.

Wolverines suffer early-season woes

The Utah Valley Wolverines’ baseball team had their first home stand of the season, winning three and losing three against Northern Colorado and St. John’s. Utah Valley then flew to Spokane, Washington to face Gonzaga in a four-game series in which they were swept.

UVU hosts’ only home rodeo of the season

The UVU Rodeo Team hosts their sole “home game” of the spring season this weekend in Heber, giving fans and newbies alike a chance to watch top-ranked UVU athletes compete in one of the final rodeos of the season. The three-day rodeo at the Wasatch County Special Events Center in Heber will be the second-to-last rodeo for Wolverine competitors to qualify for the National Collegiate Rodeo Championships, and coach Shane Draper says that his teams are in a good spot to earn a trip to Nationals in June.

Cathy Nixon. Has been at the helm for the lady Wolverines for 14 seasons and has played a significant part in many landmark milestones at Utah Valley. As a player, Nixon starred at BYU where she was named as an All-American in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

Cutler Demands Trade Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler of the Denver Broncos has asked to be traded. Cutler was upset because the Broncos were willing to trade him in order to acquire Matt Cassel, and when that trade fell through there was still bad blood. Cutler refused to show up for the first team meeting of the year and hopes to never have to show up again.

March Madness on the horizon for Wolverines?

The grandest stage in sports, the event that turns stars into heroes and heroes into legends is the NCAA Basketball Tournament — simply known to basketball fans around the country as March Madness. Since Bird and Magic faced off in the 1979 tournament final, March Madness has become a stepping-stone for college basketball stars entering into the NBA, and Utah Valley University, as of next season, will technically be eligible to be invited to the big dance.
