Draper named rodeo coach of the year

The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association recently named former Brookside Elementary teacher Shane Draper Rocky Mountain Region Rodeo Coach of the Year. Draper, who traded in his math and science teaching hat last year for a cowboy hat, is now head coach of the UVU Rodeo team.

RSL scores shutout victory over Toronto

RSL took on Toronto FC at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday June 27, and came away with a 3-0 win with goals from Yura Movsisyan, Kyle Beckerman, and Clint Mathis. RSL had their work cut out for them right from the beginning. In only the second minute Toronto was given their first corner kick creating a chance for them to score first but failed.

RSL back on track

Real Salt Lake has been struggling as of late, to say the least. However, things may be making a turn for the better. On June 13 RSL beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0. This not only marks RSL’s first victory in eight matches, which they dominated in a 6-0 conquest over the New England Revolution, it is also their first and only win on the road this season.

Sosa’s Juiced Retired baseball player Sammy Sosa was one of the players on the list of 104 players who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003. Before his name was leaked, he had denied using PEDs to ESPN as well as Congress. The only other name on the list of 104 players that has been released is Alex Rodriguez.

Tuesday offered action without injury for UVU athletes, and plenty of ups and downs and successes, alongside disappointments. Jake Woolstehulme kicked up a heap of dust in his steer wrestling run. With the clock run 7 seconds flat, Jake picked up a devastating 10-second penalty when his horse broke out at the gate.

Former Wolverine goes to the Show Former Wolverine Mitch Jones became just the second Utah Valley player to appear in a Major League Baseball game when he pitch-hit for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jones made his debut with an at-bat in front of a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd.

Nearly three months ago, Ryan Toolson played in his final game as a Wolverine. As the clock neared quadruple zero, coach Dick Hunsaker cleared the bench allowing Toolson to revel in his final moments as a college superstar with the crowd giving him a standing ovation as he made his way to the bench.

‘Real’ Rough Start

The year after Real Salt Lake was just one win away from playing for the MLS cup, the team is now are struggling just to get on a winning track. As of June 5, RSL is 3-7-2 and things could not be going worse. Their last win came on April 25. The season started strong for RSL, winning three of their first five, but since scoring six goals against the New England Revolution they have not been able to get one in the win column.

UVU finishes on high note

Spring semester ended over a month ago, but Utah Valley University baseball continued their season with 11 more games to go in the month of May. All 11 games were away, the first of which was in Colorado to face Northern Colorado for a four-game series taking three out of four games.

UVU Men and Women Sweep the GWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Utah Valley University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Houston Baptist University. The UVU women’s team won with a score of 253.

Wolverines get one win on the road

UVU set out on a four-game road trip April 10-11 and came away with one win against Northern Colorado. The game on Friday April 10 became the only victory of their trip to Colorado, an 8-7 victory. The Wolverines got the game off to a quick start scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Eric Madsen has taken over the Utah Valley baseball program after serving the past five seasons as an assistant coach under Steve Gardner. Madsen has been a part of the program since the school’s first season of NCAA Division I competition in 2003 and is now the first head coach of Utah Valley University.

Lacrosse, originally a Canadian French phrase jeu de la crosse or “game of the hooked stick” was started by early American Indians in the 17th century. Now in the 21st century the game has hooked students and spectators alike to UVU’s nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team.
