FORMER SISTER-IN-LAW OF O.J. SIMPSON TO SPEAK ON CAMPUS
Tanya Brown, sister of the late Nicole Brown Simpson and ex-sister-in-law of recently convicted O.J. Simpson, will speak to UVU students regarding domestic violence March 10 at 1 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. The event, which is sponsored by UVUSA, is free and open to the public.
Brown’s remarks will be centered on actions that individuals can take to prevent domestic violence. She is an ardent believer that domestic violence is not “just a woman’s issue” and will tailor her remarks to the uniquely diverse UVU community.
“Tanya will bring [out] one of our society’s darkest realities and educate students on why it is so important to have a dialogue about domestic violence,” said UVUSA vice president David Smith. “We all know of someone, directly or indirectly, whose life has been affected by abuse.”
The subject is particularly relevant for Utah, which has had its fair share of domestic violence-related casualties. In 2008, the Utah Domestic Violence Council reported 22 domestic violence deaths in the state. More than 1,800 domestic violence cases were reviewed by the district attorney’s office that same year.
In conjunction with Brown’s presentation, UVUSA will be hosting AKT (Awareness Knowledge Training) president and defense expert Michael May, who will teach self-defense techniques in Centre Stage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These classes will be provided free of charge and all students, faculty and community members are invited to attend.
NOVELL VICE PRESIDENT TO LECTURE ON HIGH-TECH BUSINESS
The Reed & Christine Halladay Executive Lecture Series will feature Mark Rogers, vice president of international business development for Novell, Inc., this Thursday, March 5 in the Ragan Theater. The presentation will begin at noon.
Rogers has 25 years of leadership and experience in business development, sales, channel and solutions marketing in the high-tech industry. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brigham Young University and speaks fluent Spanish. Rogers has also made an impact on the community by serving on multiple boards throughout his career, including his current role as chair of the UVU Woodbury School of Business’ National Advisory Council.
The Woodbury School of Business hosts the weekly Executive Lecture Series. It brings fascinating, successful business and community leaders to UVU to share their business experiences and make recommendations to students as they prepare for their careers. The event is free and is open to all students, faculty and the public.
UVUPHORIA! II TICKETS GO ON SALE THIS WEEKEND — KELLY CLARKSON TO HEADLINE CONCERT
The multi-platinum Kelly Clarkson of American Idol fame will be performing June 11, as part of UVUphoria! II and the Orem Summerfest at the UVU Brent Brown Ballpark.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and entertainment begins at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale this weekend and can be purchased at any SmithsTix outlet or online at SmithsTix.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the McKay Events Center Box Office.
General admission tickets for the concert are $25 each, but a limited number of Family Four Pack tickets are also available (four tickets for $60). For $100, attendees interested in VIP seating can purchase a ticket in the VIP section, which includes a Kelly Clarkson tour T-shirt and a copy of Clarkson’s new album, All I Ever Wanted, which will be released March 10. There are also very limited $250 VIP tickets available, which include dinner, the CD, T-shirt and seats right in front of the stage.
Orem residents and UVU employees and students can purchase general admission tickets for $15, which is a $10 discount on the general admission ticket price.

CA CLINIC CLAIMS TO CREATE DESIGNER BABIES – A Los Angeles fertility clinic says it will soon be able to help parents select gender and physical traits when they undergo fertility treatment through the clinic. The LA Fertility institutes is said to have already received twelve requests and that the service is scheduled to begin next year. Physical traits that parents will be able to select include hair and eye color. However, the new technology has raised concerns within the global medical community about genetic enhancement. The procedure, know as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), is trait-selection technique that has been used for medical purposes, but never cosmetic reasons.
WAL-MART SHOPPER FINDS TEETH IN WALLET – A customer shopping at a Massachusetts Wal-Mart claimed he found human teeth when he unzipped a compartment of a bill-fold wallet. Police have confirmed that ten teeth were found on Saturday by the customer, who left before employees had a chance to get his name. The wallet still had the original tags attached to it. Police investigating said the teeth belong to an adult, but there was no gum tissue or blood left on the teeth, which rules out DNA testing.
