Poverty, corruption, and “Most Holy Death” grip Mexico, photojournalist says

Decades of government corruption, drug trafficking and unethical free trade agreements with the U.S. have sparked the re-emergence of La Santísima Muerte, “Most Holy Death,” which is beginning to pervade throughout Mexican culture as a fashionable, deified, archetype, according to a Mexican photojournalist.

Richard Hawks speaks to Orem Institute about prioritizing

Richard Hawks spoke at the Orem Institute on Friday, Feb. 22, speaking to the students about prioritizing their lives. He spoke of some important things that each person needs to do to be happy in life, despite busy schedules and lack of funds. He said, “There is not enough time in the day for you to do everything you need to do, but there are four things you need to do.” Brother Hawks read from a book called Not By Bread Alone, written by Bryant S. Hinckley, father of President Gordon B. Hinckley. In a section entitled “A Balanced Life” brother Hawks read the four things he feels every student needs to do in life. “Be glad of life, because it gives you a chance to love, to work, to play, to look up at the stars … “

Information Technology Days brings support and discussion to campus

Student involvement and input is greatly needed to further programs at UVSC, especially in its transition to university status. One such program is Information Technology (IT) and Computing. For this purpose, UVSC will be hosting IT Days, Tuesday through Thursday.

Study abroad in Japan

Language students have always dreamed of having the opportunity to visit foreign lands to use their newly acquired skills with native speakers. UVSC has recently announced the establishment of a new study abroad program to Japan. This program has been established in order to better acquaint students with the culture of Japan by experiencing it first hand.

Free wireless comes with a hitch

It seems like such a short time ago that the debate about whether or not UVSC should offer free wireless Internet was raging in its academic hallways. Though technically wireless Internet is still paid for through fees lumped in with tuition and other student fees, “free” wireless Internet was still seen by many as a victory.

Let the race begin

Another school year is turning the corner, and student government is preparing for new leadership to take the reins.
There are two teams running for positions on the executive branch of student government. Team Uphoria is headed by Jospeh Watkins running for student body preisdent, Trevor Tooke as executive vice president, Dave Smith as vice president of academics, and Courtney Welch running for vice president of student life. Team Empower is led by Steve Anderson running for student body president, Jeff Engh as executive vice president, Ben Duffy as vice president of academics, and Dani Jarvis running for vice president of activities.
