People come from all over the world to visit Utah. Some for its natural surroundings, hiking, rock climbing, and some for the culture and aspects of a religion that dominate the area and its inhabitants. Professor David Scott, however, has come with the hope to challenge young minds and give “sheltered Utah County” a taste of the real world.
For the past five years an evaluation of the school and conversations about planning, budgeting, and accountability (PBA) have occurred. According to the PBA Guidebook, “All divisions, schools, colleges, and departments (units) are charged to annually review and update plans, develop initiates for the next one to three years, and assess activities of the past year.
Information is valuable. Personal information such as bank account numbers, usernames and passwords, and Social Security numbers are especially valuable to those who would exploit them. There are many tactics and tricks used to gain access to personal information, one of which is phishing.
Dec. 1- Disorderly Conduct – A 46-year-old male was issued a citation for disorderly conduct after he was observed stalking a female during the Utah Flash game at the McKay Events Center. The suspect was also barred from the McKay Event Center for the rest of the 2008-2009 game season.
The Communications Department added a new course to their lineup this semester; the course is so popular that the department increased the number of students from 30 to 50. The course, the Student Public Relations Firm, is a student-run P.R. firm that allows students to obtain practical knowledge and working experience of public relations by working with real clients.
The College of Technology and Computing and the Department of Construction Technology presented their proposal to create a new Bachelor of Arts program to the Board of Trustees on Nov. 13. The creation of a new BA degree in Construction Management has been a focus for the last two years as Utah Valley University has seen a gradual decline in its enrollment rates for trade-based curriculum.
As the new year rolls around, so will the Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) new electronic fare collection system (EFC). Starting Jan. 1, bus riders will be required to tap their card against an electronic reader when boarding and tap off when exiting a bus or train platform.
If you want to learn tips on cooking or maybe need some financial questions answered, you need to visit the Zone on campus. The Student Engaged Learning Zone (the Zone), located inside the Sorensen Student Center west hallway, is an environment where students can participate for free in action learning activities and hobbies each weekday around noon.
Campus Briefs: PROFESSOR WINS COVETED AWARD – The UVU Foundation recently presented its 2008 Distinguished Faculty Award to David Heldenbrand, chair of computer science and pre-engineering. The Distinguished Faculty Award is an annual honor first given in 2006.
A group of students from UVU’s Culinary Arts Institute recently won a gold medal at the Utah State Junior Hot Food Team Competition. It was the first student team gold medal in UVU history. The competition was sponsored by the Beehive Chefs Chapter of the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and held in conjunction with the Utah Restaurant Association Pro Start Career Fair.
Utah Valley University’s school color is green, which is appropriate when looking at the school’s continued efforts in being an energy-efficient campus. So far, UVU has saved approximately $1.2 million in the past three years due to consolidation efforts and improving power utilization.
For $41 each way, Go Green Shuttle, a new shuttle service, takes UVU students to Dixie Campus. Not only does it allow students to leave their cars at home, but the use of compressed natural gas makes this source of transportation better for the environment.
Two UVU students recently took first place against university students from around the world with their one-of-a-kind mixing board design at the 125th annual Audio Engineering Society’s Student Grammy Award competition held in San Francisco. The two digital media students, Sean Wolsey of Springville, Utah, and Jeremy Redd of Orem, built a prototype for their built-in microphone amplifier and equalizer circuit-in-one, creating a one-of-a-kind mixing board.
The Off-Campus Housing Office, located at Campus Connection in the Student Center, helps students find local housing, helps students list their contract for sell, and also gives information to compare pricing and locations of local student complexes. For the convenience of students, the Housing Office offers three options for students to search for local housing: a website, an information packet and bulletin boards for students and community members to advertise their contracts.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Chirtoaca, gave a speech on the topic “Transition to Democracy” to an audience of 30 students and community members on Monday, Nov. 17. The speech focused on the five biggest challenges a newly formed democracy faces.
