The Library of Congress Junior Fellows internship program brings together a variety of talented and highly qualified college students from around the country. The 2009 intern class will include UVU’s own Carol Acevedo. She will be the first student from UVU to have an internship with the Library of Congress.
Acevedo came into Career Services and Student Employment in hopes of receiving the necessary help to obtain an internship in Washington D.C. Marsha Haynes, director of Internship Services and Student Employment, helped Acevedo apply and interview for an internship in the office of Senator Bob Bennett.
“After the interview, I also expressed great interest in an internship at the Library of Congress since I will be pursuing a graduate degree in library sciences,” Acevedo said. “Just a few days after that conversation, Senator Bennett’s office nominated me for an internship at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.”
The Library of Congress internship introduces students to an extensive and comprehensive repository of knowledge. Interns will be exposed to preservation, reference, access standards, information management, the U.S. copyright system and gift collections.
Acevedo’s combined experience as Features Editor at the UVU Review newspaper and as a reference librarian, along with her great academic record and community service, played a vital role in her being offered this internship.
She will graduate from UVU with a Bachelor of Arts in History this semester. She is also bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English and holds an Associates Degree in Graphic Design. She looks forward to a career as a librarian and plans to attend graduate school to obtain a degree in library science.
Acevedo said she is thrilled about this opportunity and will begin her internship this upcoming June.
