What better way for students and the community to usher in the new university than with a huge celebration party? That’s just what UVU did on June 30, when 15,000 people attended the UVUphoria celebration. The day started out with a grand opening of the new Digital Learning Center, where people explored the new 5-level library, watched dance and karate performances, listened to the Losee band, and soaked in the atmosphere of being a university.
This fall, students have the opportunity to take a class based off the history of Yellowstone National Park. Even though the name of the class is “the Yellowstone country,” according to David Wilson, the instructor, it will include most of eastern Wyoming and eastern Montana.

Starting this fall semester UVU will be implementing an REC (Resident Engagement Coordinator) program that will help students get help with any problems they’re having right where they live. As a solution to the need of on-campus housing, the REC program will create a partnership between UVU and nearby apartment complexes.
UVU’s nursing program recently purchased an iStan high fidelity patient simulator, a state-of-the-art mannequin that’s as close to a patient as it can be without a real human heart.
With former Pres. William Sederburg in his new position as the seventh Commissioner of Higher Education for the state of Utah, the search for an interim president commenced.
Accordingly, the Board of Regents appointed Liz Hitch, who will assume her new duties on Aug. 18. Hitch was the vice president of academic affairs.
WARDROBE MALFUNCTION — A federal appeals court has thrown out the $550,000 indecency fine against CBS for Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” that occurred in the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. In challenging the fine, CBS said that “fleeting, isolated or unintended” images should not automatically be taken as indecent.
By virtue of its 3.419 team GPA, the UVU women’s basketball team has earned the No. 9 ranking on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.
The Marilyn Brown Unpublished Novel Competition recently moved to a new home in UVU’s Department of English & Literature. The $1000 award has changed from being awarded every two years to being awarded annually and is open to all members of the community, whether they are students at the university or not.
UVU has once again shown its strength in the trades, ranking second in the nation at the recent SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Mo. Top students from UVU competed in 20 contest categories, bringing home six gold medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals, with students ranking in the top 15 contestants of the remaining seven categories.
The UVU Student Association (UVUSA) will be hosting a summer barbecue to encourage student involvement on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Digital Learning Center Courtyard.

As was reported in the June 30 issue of UVU Review, Pres. William A. Sederburg has officially accepted the position of Commissioner for the Utah System of Higher Education.
The State Board of Regents announced Tuesday by a unanimous vote that President William A. Sederburg be named as Utah’s seventh Commissioner of Higher Education.
This fall, as we embrace the new experience of being a university, students will also have the opportunity to embrace a new class that is being offered. The philosophy department at UVU is giving students, according to Professor Hanewicz, the opportunity to discover more about a foreign culture, “so that it won’t be so foreign to them.”
