Anderson, Wilson earn player of the week honors
The league office announced on Tuesday that Utah Valley’s Kristen Anderson and Allyce Wilson were named the Great West Conference offensive and defensive volleyball players of the week, respectively, for the week ending Oct. 5.
Anderson captured her first weekly conference honor after leading the Wolverines to a 1-1 record last week against Cal State-Bakersfield. Anderson tied the team’s season high with 23 kills in Saturday’s win over CSUB. It was the first time the St. George, Utah native recorded more than 20 kills in a match this season. She also chipped in eight block assists and two digs defensively that propelled Utah Valley to the five-set victory. For the week, the junior had a .349 attack percentage and had a total of 10 blocks.
Wilson collects her second weekly honor of the season after she posted 46 digs in two matches this past week against Cal State-Bakersfield. The junior highlighted the Wolverines defensive effort in the 3-2 win over CSUB with a season-high, 33-dig performance. For the week, the Pleasant Grove, Utah native had 46 digs while averaging 5.11 a set. She has recorded 20 or more digs in five of the team’s 11 matches this season and averages 4.49 digs per set.
Golfer finishes third at Wyoming Intercollegiate
Utah Valley golfer Nick Nelson finished in third place after a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday, at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.
Nelson finished two shots back of Denver’s Daniel Wax and Washington State’s Kevin Tucker. Wax won a scorecard playoff to take home medalist honors by virtue of shooting the lower round, a 4-under 68, to Tucker’s 72 in the final round.
As a team the Wolverines shot a combined score of 313 and finished in 18th place out of 19 teams, two shots behind Wyoming. Colorado State won the team title with a three-day total of 877, seven shots better than Idaho.
Freshman Nicholas Tarasiewicz was the next highest finisher for UVU with a final round 7-over 79 to end in a tie for 76th. Clark Fredrickson was one shot back of Tarasiewicz with an 8-over-par 80 on Sunday.
Nelson, the Alpine, Utah native recorded his second straight top-five finish after a fourth place showing at last week’s America Sky Championship. He has led the Wolverines at all four, fall events this season.
