The women’s volleyball team beat the Cougars of Chicago State last week, 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-14). This makes back-to-back wins for the lady Wolverines, and put Chicago State at 0-20 this season.
“It is difficult to stay focused against a team that’s struggling,” Coach Sam Atoa said after the victory. “We set goals on passing, serving and hitting, and the girls did a good job staying focused.”
In the first set, the score was 6-5 in favor of the Wolverines. However, UVU then rattled off 19 straight points with Kayli Broadbent at the service line to end the set.
“We just focused a lot this week on serving and eliminating errors,” Broadbent said.
The second set Chicago State was off to an early two-point lead, but the Wolverines tightened up.
The third set had the Wolverines jump to an early lead, and they never looked back resulting in a win for the set, 25-9.
Sarah Clement and Melissa Fifita led the way on offense, each tallying 10 kills. Allyce Wilson led on the defensive side with 14 digs.
Chelsea Fa’alogo made her presence felt and set things up on offense, with her 26 of the 36 total assists in the match.
The energy of the crowd was certainly not a factor. The MAWL was in full force, backing the lady Wolverines, getting into the heads of the Cougars.
Though Chicago State has lost all of their matches and won only one set, the Wolverines are looking to use the momentum of their performance against Chicago State to try and end their woes on the road.
UVU has yet to win a game on the road, but they are looking to turn the tide against Idaho State Oct. 14.
The women’s volleyball team come home Oct. 24, to face off against Texas-Pan American.
