Colorado Mesa Open Shows 6 Wolverines on the Podium

On Saturday in Grand Junction, Colorado, one of  Utah Valley University wrestlers placed for the school at the Colorado Mesa Open. While competing unattached five more Wolverine athletes found the podium for their respective weight classes bring the total for the trip up to six.

For the school, freshman Matthew Ontiveros (141) found a fourth place. While taking part in his first collegiate tournament, Ontiveros went 4-2 .

While sophomores Jarod Maynes (133) and Dustin Dennison (heavyweight) led the way by each recording third place finishes. They were joined by Josh Temple (125) and Micahel Suwyn (157) as they both laid claim to a fourth. The UVU athletes on the podium was rounded out by Jesse Christensen who finished in fifth while competing at 174 pounds.

There were four other UVU athletes participating in the tournament. Freshman Tyler Scott (125, unattached), sophomore Jared Harris (149), and redshirting freshman Aryton Almberg all went 1-2. While competing unattached at 157 pounds, freshman DJ Argyle finished with an 0-2 outing.

The majority of UVU’s  starters sat out this tournament in preparation of next week’s opening-season dual competition. The gentlemen Wolverines will now head to Boise, Idaho, to take on both Boise State and Iowa State in dual action on Friday, November 14th.
