Utah Valley University men’s soccer team closed out the WAC regular season with a 1-0 shutout at San Jose State on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Wolverines the No. 3 seed in this week’s Wester Athletic Conference Tournament. Not to mention a fourth place finish over all with 17 points in its inaugural season.

The only goal of the match came in the 30th minute when Karson Payton made his team-best fifth assist of the year to Matt Gay. The goal marks gay’s team -high seventh of the season and is also his third game-winner for the year so far.

The blanking is a second for Derek Wilcox, recording six saves in the game, and the team’s fifth of the season. Wilcox had combined with Collin Partee in last week’s shutout of Houston Baptist.

The Wolverines will be entering this year’s WAC Tournament as winners of three straight, matching the longest winning streak of the season, as UVU remain unbeaten in their last four games.

The gentlemen Wolverines (9-6-2, 5-3-2) open the tournament Thursday at 8:30p.m. MT against No. 6 Bakersfield at Championship Field in Seattle. Every match of the Tournament can be seen live on the WAC Digital Network.
