Ramadan, the Arabic name for the ninth month on the Islamic calender, is a religious observation for those of the Islam faith, wherein Muslims fast from eating, drinking and sexual activity during the daylight.
The fast, which this year began on Aug. 11 and will continue through Sept. 10, is traditionally begun with the Ramadan iftar dinner. The International Center is sponsoring a program that will allow both observant Muslims and the culturally curious to participate in the month’s traditional kickoff.
The program will also celebrate faculty members Biology Associate Professor Ruhul Kuddus and Associate Vice President for Academic Administration Mohammed El-Saidi. Their service contributions to local Muslim groups reflect the passionate support within their community, as well as the community at large.
The meal served will be in compliance with “halal,” Islamic dietary guidelines similar to Jewish kosher or the LDS Word of Wisdom.
The program will be held at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Centre Stage.
