Don’t make the same mistake I did

Five years ago I entered this campus and, for a full three years of school, I was completely oblivious to how amazing UVU athletics were.

In fall of 2008 I joined the UVU Review as a sports writer. It was then that I saw how awesome the UVU athletics games really were.

While covering my first women’s basketball game at the Events Center, I was nervous, excited and a little freaked out.
I studied the game and took down notes as fast as I could. The talent I was watching blew me away.

That season I watched as the “Canadian Duo,” comprised of Robyn Fairbanks and Julie McMurray, along with the rest of the roster made powerful impressions on those who watched them. They showed fans that the jerseys they wore meant something to them.

McMurray became the third Utah Valley women’s basketball player to reach 1,000 career points, while Fairbanks became the first Utah Valley player to bring down 1,000 rebounds.

Many double-doubles and a few triple-doubles were made by players on the roster during that season. I watched as they took the Division I Independent Championship at the end of the season.

I was able to watch Fairbanks, Sandy Wall, Hollie Beaman, Lauren Smith and Jordyn Bowen finish their basketball careers at UVU.

I was lucky to be a part of it as a reporter, but still to this day I wish I had attended games sooner.

Go to as many games as you can to cheer on your Wolverines, and become part of The MAWL. You’ll be sorry if you don’t.
