Former Wolverine Mitch Jones became just the second Utah Valley player to appear in a Major League Baseball game when he pitch-hit for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jones made his debut with an at-bat in front of a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd. He worked the count full but struck out on a change-up.
Jones played two seasons at Utah Valley and amassed 41 career home runs. That number stands as both the juco and Division I school records at UVU.
Jones spent 10 years in the Minors and Japan. This season while playing for the Albuquerque Isotopes, he is tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 21 home runs.
Kam Mickolio was the first Utah Valley player to appear in a MLB game, doing so in 2008 for the Baltimore Orioloes.
UVU Places 48 athletes on All-Academic Team
Utah Valley University had 48 student athletes named to the Great West Conference Winter/Spring All-Academic Team, the conference office announced on Friday.
Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year Tierra Zaugg leads an extensive list of athletes hailing from all men’s and women’s sports at UVU.
Selection to the team requires that the student-athlete achieve a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average and have participated in at least 50% of the contests. The honorees must also be at least a sophomore athletically.
There were 14 male and 13 female members of the Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field teams that made the list. Six members of the women’s basketball team, including three-time All-American Robyn Fairbanks, were also named the team.
