Seven years, and Sept. 11 still won’t change

UVU welcomed a speaker whose published work concerning Sept. 11 has triggered a great deal of speculation as to the happenings of that fateful day in history. Dr. Steven E. Jones, a former BYU professor, has taken his research dealing with the physics of the falling twin towers that comprised the former buildings of the World Trade Center.

Bridal Veil Falls revamped

Anyone who has dreamed of bright cascading waters can now own a piece of Bridal Veil Falls. In June Bridal Veil Falls, LLC, began talking to the Grow family about obtaining the Bridal Veil Falls property. The Grows have owned the property for many years and had hoped to reopen the ruined restaurant that stands at the base of the falls.

Campus: Touchstones calls for submissions: Touchstones Literary Journal wants to publish UVU students’ work. They are looking for fresh, innovative poetry, prose, one-act plays, art and photography from students of all disciplines. Submit and make history by becoming a part of their first publication as a university.

The NYC experience

Seven Utah Valley University students recently returned from a “Pathways to New York” event, where students learned from business professionals at prestigious companies in New York City. The purpose of the trip was to help students network with professionals and get a feel for what NYC has to offer.

Parking rat race

With the increase in enrollment and replacing a parking lot with the new Digital Learning Center, finding a good parking space on campus is difficult. UVU Parking and Transportation has been trying to meet students’ parking needs. They have increased the campus motorcycle parking this semester, have acquired land near the university that might be used for parking, and have proposed that a parking garage be built on campus.

Student finalist for $100,000 in essay contest

The Jaws of Life saved Danny Gibbons from a nearly fatal auto accident in 2005. A few years later, his life-turning experience became his winning story in the “Someday Stories” contest sponsored by Wells Fargo. Gibbons saw the contest advertised on his Wells Fargo auto loan statement.

UVU: Is it really green?

Walking around campus, many blue recycling bins can be seen around the hallways. Although UVU has a recycling program, it doesn’t quite match up to other campuses in the state.

Master of Education

The 22 students enrolled in UVU’s first graduate program started their first day of class on Sept. 2. Faculty and staff from the master’s of education program introduced themselves to all the students during an orientation before their class started. Packets were also handed out detailing what should be expected during the two-year program.

In last week’s issue, the UVU Review reported that the former School of H.A.S.S. has split into the College of H.A.S.S. and the School of Arts. For the latter, many departments face problems of space — problems that could be solved if new

New Lab for Forensics majors

The difference between ordinary elementary school kitchens and what was once the kitchen in the former Vineyard Elementary-now UVU’s Education Building-is that in ordinary elementary school kitchens hairnets are obligatory and they typically do not have upwards of half a million dollars in equipment. But in EB 136 there is just that. And it’s not a kitchen anymore; it’s UVU’s state-of-the-art forensic science lab, hairnets optional.

Campus: Wildflower photographs needed: Jim Harris, a biology professor at UVU, is collecting photographs of Mount Timpanogos wildflowers in order to build a Web site database. The database will be used to plot plant distributions and correlate that data with other information like environmental factors and elevation in order to create a detailed analysis of the vegetation of Mount Timpanogos.
