Police Blotter

Oct. 1 – DRUG OVERDOSE – UVU police and Orem Paramedics responded to the Digital Learning Center due to a male who had passed out. The male had overdosed on prescription painkillers and was taken to a local hospital for further treatment. Oct. 6 ñ MEDICAL – A 55-year-old male suffered a possible heart attack in the Gunther Trades building.

Professor explores women’s role in politics

In 1920, women in the United States took their first step into politics when the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment granted them the right to vote. Since this Amendment, women have developed the strength and expertise required to do much more than just vote — they are running for office and winning.

Professor’s election forecast model used by the Wall Street Journal

Utah Valley University professor of political science Jay A. DeSart was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal blog for an election forecast model determining a presidential victory for Obama in November. It was a model that DeSart and co-author Dr. Thomas Holbrook from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee created nearly 10 years ago.

FINLAND- Finland’s ex-president Martti Ahtisaari won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to build a lasting peace from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Middle East. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it honored Ahtisaari for his efforts taking place for more than three decades to resolve international conflicts.

Prize money offered in speech competition

Winning money for speaking does not happen every day, although some politicians may have you think otherwise. Fortunately for the Utah Valley University student body, the Maria Clegg Jones Speech competition, sponsored by the Communications Department, comes for the second time to campus.

Two choices: live or die

Mark Zupan, a Paralympian who has recently won a gold medal in Beijing, has starred in “Murderball” and has written a book titled “Gimp,” spoke on Thursday in honor of disability week. “Fifteen years ago when I first got hurt, I thought my life was over,” Zupan said.

Planned Parenthood club advocates health and education

It’s a common local misconception, according to community health education major and Voices for Planned Parenthood intern Pam Hatch, that Utah women have no need for cervical cancer screenings and vaccinations, emergency contraception or contraception in general.

Schabas: National Progress vs. The Death Penalty

UVU hosted the 4th Annual Symposium on Restorative Justice, Punishment, and the Death Penalty on Thursday. The final speaker in the symposium, Prof. William A. Schabas, spoke on the impact of the death penalty and its abolition on the international community.

Campus briefs: New UVU ski instructor course offered – UVU Community Education has formed a partnership with Deer Valley in offering a non-credit ski instructor training. Students will learn how to teach others to ski and how to improve their own skiing. This class will be hands on and taught on the snow at Deer Valley Ski Resort for 12 hours and only nine hours in a classroom.

Early voting machines make their way to campus

Early voting machines will be available in the Student Government Office, Oct. 21 through Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing the community to vote at UVU. “The early voting booths that will be on campus are for Utah County residents,” said Tom Merrill, UVUSA Chief Justice.

Students participate in Festival Fringe

Eight UVU students had the opportunity to travel to Scotland to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is the world’s largest arts festival, held annually in Scotland. The students performed “Flies in the Snuffbox,” which consists of four comical one-act plays composed by playwright Anton Chekhov.

“A Second Chance in Life”

That is the name Daniel Gibbons gave his essay when he entered the Someday Stories contest held by Wells Fargo Bank earlier this year.

Since the beginning, Daniel has been a winner: winning $1,000 first, then $10,000 and now having the chance to win $100,000.

Get published. Every student on campus has the opportunity to be a published author. “Crescat Scientia” is UVU’s annual journal of history. Established in 2003, the journal is open to both students and staff. The open submission process goes through mid-spring 2009.

Sept. 24 – THEFT – A windshield was stolen from a motorcycle that had been parked in lot M. Sept. 26 – MEDICAL – A 24-year-old male UVU student crashed his longboard near lot D on College Drive.
