The women’s golf team is almost to the end of the first half of an incredible season.

The lady Wolverines have played in various all-day tournaments since early September. They have played in Utah, Montana and Arizona and will be in California the beginning of October.

The women’s golf team has 10 players, five of whom are from Utah. The team is relatively young with three freshman, four sophomores, one junior and two returning seniors.

Coach Sue Nyhus, who is in her first season at UVU after 11 seasons with BYU said, “I really had no expectations coming into the season. I didn’t know any of the girls. I just wanted our team to improve our scoring averages throughout the year.”

On Sept. 20-21, the team finished in fifth place at the Mountain Shootout in Flagstaff, Ariz. It was deemed a success as they rallied back as a team on the second day led by the senior Abbie Archibald.

Archibald shot her personal best of 74, tying a school record. That was an improvement of 14 shots from the opening round. Sophomore Morgan Workman improved 11 shots on the second day to shoot an 81.

“The girls are getting better every day,” Nyhus said.

Archibald was the team’s MVP the first half of the season, according to Nyhus. Archibald has the lowest average score over the season at 79.4 through five rounds covering three tournaments.

Nyhus has high expectations for their upcoming trip to the Firestone Grill Invitational, being held Oct. 4-5.

“The hope that everyone plays their best golf and that we look to break school records,” she said.

Nyhus claimed the team’s biggest weakness that needs to be improved upon for the second half of the season is the girls’ confidence level. Nyhus believes each player should look to improve individually the rest of the year as a benefit to the team collectively.

The team will end their fall season on Oct. 18-19 at the Shocker Invitational in Wichita, Kan. They will then have a long break for the winter and start up the second half of the season on February 26-27, 2011, in Sedona, Ariz. at the Red Rocks Invitational.
