Utah Valley’s Track & Field team is ready for the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. In the midst of a stellar season, the men are entering the championships ranked in the top 15 of the region. The women aren’t doing too shabby, either, breaking school records meet after meet.

Undoubtedly, they can go into this meet with confidence.

Speaking with members of the team, one can sense the confidence among the squad. There are some great athletes on the team, and all of them have been great at challenging one another. As a result, Jessica Beatty has set school records in the hurdles and high jump. On the men’s side, Scott Moake is shattering high jump records.

There are also a few nationally ranked athletes on this year’s team. Michael McPherson is ranked 18th and Rusty Jones is ranked 23rd in the heptathlon. With two ranked athletes in that event, they are sure to perform quite well against even the best of competition.

Yet, all of them understand the importance of good coaching and teamwork. In a sport that focuses a lot on the efforts of an individual, it can be hard to recognize the importance of the group. The confidence this team shows should not be confused with arrogance. It takes a lot of humility to acknowledge that, despite your talent, it takes a team to achieve truly great things. Perhaps that is what makes this team so special. They are willing to work hard and trust one another.

That kind of trust and hard work will be imperative to their success in their biggest meet thus far this season.

Coming into the Indoor Championships, UVU will face the toughest competition in the conference. The top athletes from conference will be there, including one of the school’s biggest new rivals, New Mexico State. That being said, UVU’s athletes should still shine in the meet. They have the work ethic and the talent to put up a great fight against any opponent. It’s very likely that several will place first in their events. Many of the athletes have a goal to do so in a meet this season.

The WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held in Colorado Springs, CO, on February 28.
