Junior Outside Hitter Earns MVP Honors at Weber State Invitational

Sept. 1, 2009

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University’s Kayli Broadbent was named Tuesday the Great West Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for her MVP efforts in leading the Wolverines to the Weber State Invitational title last weekend.

The junior outside hitter recorded 57 kills and hit at .360 percent as the Wolverines started the year 3-0 for the first time since becoming a four-year program.

“I’m excited by the way she played this last weekend and the way she kept her poise after struggling a little bit in the first match,” UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. “She is fun to coach and fun to watch and when she’s on her game it is great to see that displayed on the court.”

At the Weber State Invitational she averaged 5.18 kills per set in wins over Gonzaga (3-1), Weber State (3-0) and Utah State (3-1).

Most notably, she was 9-for-9 in kills in the first set against Weber State. At one point she was 15-for-15 before ending the match 19-for-25 (.720), which is the second-highest hitting percentage in a match in school history.

The Wolverines jump back into action this weekend when they host No. 17 Utah on Friday, Sept. 4, in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational. The following day the Wolverines will play Missouri and Washington State.

Houle announces his 2009 cross-country team captains

All four captains are at least entering their fourth year at UVU

Aug. 26, 2009

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University cross-country coach Scott Houle announced his 2009 men’s and women’s team captains Wednesday. Redshirt seniors Jacob Buhler and Chase Englestead have been selected to lead the men’s team while redshirt senior Karinne Bentley and redshirt junior Mary Nothum will strive to lead the women’s squad.

“All four of these athletes have been here at UVU for a while now,” Houle said. “They all redshirted last season so that they could participate at full NCAA Division I status for at least this season and be eligible for the opportunity to make it to Regionals and the NCAA Championships. They will all be great leaders for our younger athletes.”

Buhler (Military, N.D./Red River HS), Englestead (Panguitch, Utah/Panguitch HS), and Bentley (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS) are all entering their fifth year here at Utah Valley while Nothum (Washington, Mo./Washington HS) enters her fourth. All four captains have had tremendous careers with the Wolverines, consistently being the top finishers in nearly every meet for UVU.
