Women’s golf finishes fall with 17th-place finish

The Utah Valley women’s golf team capped the 2008 fall season with a 17th-place finish in the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday. Kasey Larson (76-84–160) was the top finisher for UVU, tying for 46th after an 84 in Tuesday’s final round. Brittany Butler (84-78–162) had the best score among the Wolverine golfers in the final round, firing a 6-over-par 78 to finish in a tie for 53rd.The remaining three UVU golfers that competed — Erika Baldwin, Abbie Lei Archibald and Abby Wheeling — all finished with identical two-round scores of 173 and tied for 89th. San Jose State, who entered the day with a four shot lead over host Cal Poly, ran away with the team title by 12 shots over Sacramento State. Xavier’s Mary Beth McKenna took home medalist honors. Utah Valley’s spring schedule will start Feb. 9-10, 2009 in the Lady Braveheart Challenge at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California.

Clough, Salcido named Players of the Week

Utah Valley’s Jenni Clough and Brooke Salcido have been dubbed the Great West Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for their performance last week, the league office announced Tuesday. Clough earned her first weekly honor and becomes the third Wolverine to collect offensive weekly honors. The senior collected three points in a 4-0 win over NJIT in the first match of the United Soccer Conference Tournament in Farmville, Virginia. A native of South Jordan, Utah, Clough also assisted the second goal and added an insurance goal to put UVU up 3-0 in the 37th minute. It was her sixth goal of the season and the 26th of her career at UVU, a school record. Salcido captured her first weekly honor after leading the Wolverines defense that only surrendered four shots on goal in two games this week when Utah Valley went 1-1. The Las Vegas native played all 180 minutes on the field. UVU picked up a 4-0 blanking of NJIT after suffering a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Seattle University earlier in the week. The 2008 Wolverines will go down as the winningest team in the school’s six-year NCAA history. The team’s 11 wins on the season surpassed the school record by two. The team’s 4-0 start was not only the best in school history, but was also part of the Wolverines’ longest winning streak of seven dating back to the 2007 season. Utah Valley was also a perfect 5-0 in the conference regular season, outscoring its opponents 15-to-1.
