Utah Valley’s women’s soccer team continues to strive for more success than ever as they finished off their first couple of weeks at Clyde Field this season.
With six games down, two of them being home, the Wolverines haven’t had the best of luck as they end this last week with a 1-4-1 record.
“We are a young team and we’ve had a couple of injuries to some key players,” said head coach Brent Anderson. “We haven’t made our stride quite yet but it’s coming and we will.”
UVU kicked off the season late August with an unexpected 2-1 loss against UTEP. After another 2-1 upset against the University of Hawaii that took place the following week at the OHANA Hotels & Suites No Ka Oi Invitational, the Wolverines took their first 3-2 victory against Sacred Heart.
“The team is getting some valuable experience and we will keep building on what we’ve been doing well and we’ll get there,” Anderson said. “Nobody’s satisfied or pleased with what we’ve done so far but we’re working hard and making it into something positive.”
After a rocky week, the team set quest back to the Happy Valley where games weren’t looking to happy as the Wolverines competed against their in-state rivals Utah State, Weber State and Southern Utah.
Both Utah State and Weber State took the win in overtime leaving UVU with loses of 2-1 and 1-0.
Utah Valley took on Southern Utah last Saturday for a similar repeat of last year’s game. The Wolverines and Thunderbirds’ finished the game with a 2-2 tie.
“I think we saw some real positive things come out of the game at Southern Utah for the first time this season,” Anderson said. “I thought we generated a lot of attacking play.”
The Wolverines will have crawled back to Clyde Field as of Thursday, Sept. 13 to play Idaho State.
“We’re going to build on that [attacking play] and really look to finish off the chances we’re creating now and hopefully it’ll be an exciting game and we’ll come out with a victory,” Anderson said. “The teams been working hard and I think it’s due. Its time.”
Utah Valley hits the road to the west coast for another week of away games in California, Washington, Wyoming and Idaho. Nothing but high hopes emit from coach Anderson as he reassures the positive attitudes and potential his young team has.
“We’ve had more freshmen come into key positions and I think that we have some great upper class despite some of the challenges we’ve faced,” Anderson said. “They’re keeping positive and staying together with the team. They’ve showed us great leadership.”
