Every spring hundreds of students at Utah Valley University make the glorious walk through the McKay Center, dressed in their sleek robes in order to receive their diplomas — four years of hard work finally paying off. Each senior, through strenuous effort, has done their best to leave their mark at UVU. Of all those seniors though, no one will leave their legacy at UVU quite like Ryan Toolson and Robyn Fairbanks.
The two star basketball players have written their names in the record book so many times it reads like a personal biography. Both players will leave UVU as the most prolific scorers in the school’s history. However, the numbers don’t tell the entire story. Toolson and Fairbanks have garnered national attention throughout their careers at UVU and both have the option to play professionally.
While Toolson and Fairbanks dominated the attention from the media, several other senior athletes quietly made a name for themselves. Senior Jenni Clough finished her illustrious tenure as a Wolverine as the all-time goal scorer on the soccer pitch. Her teammates Shantae Adams-Yeates and Mallory Schott, both seniors, helped the lady Wolverines to the most successful season in Division I history.
Kristi Lindley was the lone senior on the volleyball team and will finish her career as the second all-time in assists at UVU. On the hardwood, Sandy Wall helped pace UVU to a 17-win season and the Independent Tournament Championship. While on the men’s team captain Josh Olsen led the team in assists and Brett Ravenberg finished second on the team in blocks per game.
The softball and baseball teams have yet to wrap up their seasons, but senior leadership on both teams has been pivotal through their tough seasons. Needless to say, senior leadership has been an anchor to each Wolverine program. Graduation will do a number on UVU athletics, but there are plenty of talented athletes ready to step into the senior spotlight in 2010.
