Zumba, a Latin-inspired workout, is one of the fastest growing fitness classes in the world.

The class combines international Latin music and dance moves to create an active, high-powered aerobic class. It’s a way to workout your entire body and do cardio without having to force yourself to run or lift weights.

Zumba Fitness, a global company developed by Alberto “Beto” Perez, describes this work out as an “Exercise in Disguise.”

“It’s such a good time that people don’t even realize they are working out,” said instructor Teresa Avua’a.

If you are a college student trying to avoid that freshman 15 or the stress of school, Zumba is they key. Many say it’s a way to relieve stress and lose weight.

The dynamic cultural Latin music along with popular pop and hip-hop music incorporated in the class is what sets Zumba aside from all other fitness classes.

“You can just let everything go and let the music take over your body,” said Avua’a.

Perez created Zumba through his passion for Latin music.  He felt it would add a touch of fun to group fitness classes.  Perez introduced Zumba to the states from 2000-2001, and after much struggle, was accepted by two business operators for his style and charisma. Together they developed Zumba Fitness with over 10,000 instructors in over 30 countries.

Zumba classes are offered at many fitness centers including Gold’s Gym and 24 Hour Fitness in Orem and Provo.  UVU will be offering a Zumba class spring semester TR at 1:00 p.m. and Fridays at 5:30 p.m.
