Big-budget Utahan Shakespeare can be hard to find north of Cedar City.

Yet once again, Salt Lake’s Pioneer Theater Company is proving their worth as a respite from the constant barrage of mid-century comedy and musical theater found in the halls of Utah’s playhouses.

Hamlet opened at PTC last Friday. One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Hamlet is a beautiful exploration of treachery, revenge, family dysfunction and madness.

The cast is a pastiche of locally beloved actors and experienced newcomers, many of whom have recognizable film experience. Prince Hamlet was in NBC’s Kings, Gertrude was in Independence Day and Touched by an Angel, and Ophelia will be in HBO’s upcoming Boardwalk Empire.

This is what passes for theater criticism at our good state’s newest university? I’ve added a few comments within in parentheses.

By the way, the answer is ‘to be’: Pioneer Theater Company opens Hamlet

Big-budget Utahan Shakespeare (What is Utahan Shakespeare, as opposed to Shakespeare in Utah?) can be hard to find north of Cedar City.

Yet once again, Salt Lake’s Pioneer Theater Company is proving their (not its, but their) worth as a respite from the constant barrage of mid-century (mid-century is usually defined as 1933 to 1965) comedy and musical theater found in the halls (not in theaters but in halls) of Utah’s playhouses (Hmmm: Only one big-budget Shakespeare production north of Cedar City? And all the other shows are comedies and musicals — from 1933 to 1965?).

Hamlet opened at PTC last Friday. One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Hamlet is a beautiful…
