Jessica Harris, a student in the Technology Management program, has been awarded the Women Tech Award for Student Development. She was nominated for her exemplary ability in STEM classes and leadership contributions.
“I have developed as a student through STEM classes as well as leadership roles, so I am honored to be nominated,” said Harris.
The Women Tech Council’s website describes Harris as “a serious and thoughtful student” who “finds herself contributing in volunteer opportunities within the community, rendering her service while continuing her pursuits in leadership roles.”
Harris will assist UVU’s Roots of Knowledge Project as a part of the academic membership. This project will create a stained glass window that depicts the intellectual journey of mankind and will be located on the UVU campus near the library.
Before attending UVU Harris was a student at Snow College where she twice competed in the national Phi Beta Lambda competitions, placing ninth in Community Service in Nashville, Tenn. She plans to graduate next summer and would then like to start her own web design company.
The Women Tech Awards exist to recognize innovative women who are contributing to technology-related fields and to seek to inspire future generations of women to participate in the technology sector, where they are underrepresented.
“After attending UVU I have realized how women in STEM are low in numbers, and I hope that being nominated and recognized will help promote the STEM programs and influence women to be more involved in the world of technology,” said Harris.
The Women Tech Council, a community founded in 2007 to support women who work in technology, sponsored the Eighth Annual Women Tech Awards. The Women Tech Council enables distinguished women in technological careers to provide guidance, encouragement and networking for those seeking to break barriers and enter this typically male-dominated field.
“We love this opportunity to recognize women in technology who are impacting the technology economy in a meaningful way. The 16 finalists represent an elite group of women. They are inspiring and helping create tremendous value,” Cydni Tetro, president of the Women Tech Council said in a written statement. “And it is our honor to provide a platform to recognize women of this caliber. Congratulations to this year’s finalists.”
The Eighth Annual Women Tech Awards Luncheon was held Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
So proud of you Jessica. You are amazing.
