The Bird that Cannot Fly

March 9, 2009 Jessica Burnham 0

“Andrew Bird is easy to appreciate musically because his style is so completely innovative that he is not comparable to any other artist,” said UVU student and recent concert attendee Benjamin Buxton. With the release of his new album Noble Beast on Jan. 20, Andrew Bird has proven himself once again.

Outdoor adventurers read on.

March 9, 2009 Shaylene Nistler 0

If the only thing standing between you and an outdoor adventure is someone to organize the trip, look no further! Provo and Orem are full of other students just as anxious as you to experience the thrill of the mountains, and inexpensive local adventure groups who take care of all the planning details for you.

Shoga

March 9, 2009 Emily Maria Smith 0

Students may be a little hesitant to give Shoga, the modern Japanese sushi bar and restaurant, a try — many other sushi restaurants in the Orem and Provo area can leave you wanting. After having visited restaurants such as Asuka, Damae and even Happy Sumo, I am confident when I say Shoga serves the finest sushi in the valley.

Design on a dime

March 9, 2009 Eva Herrey 0

UVU’s costume design has a unique and affordable program. Students do not have to go to expensive design schools to get the initial training in the art of costume design to become successful. Small design classes offer each individual close mentoring while working on several designs.

Abandon all hope

March 9, 2009 Bryce Hatch 0

From its chilling opening line, “Abandon hope all ye who enter here,” the virtually plotless American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, drags us screaming and giggling into the empty heart of a decadent society, obsessed with money and status. Wall Street trader Patrick Bateman’s relentless restauranteering and terrifyingly banal monologues on designer clothes juxtapose powerfully with him graphically torturing and killing lots of people- predominantly women.

“Fate keeps on happening”

March 9, 2009 Mel Sundquist 0

American author Anita Loos, a self-proclaimed cinematic elitist cavorted with Hollywood bigwigs such as John Emerson, Frances Marion, Douglas Fairbanks, and H.L. Mencken in the golden years of cinema. In her years working in the movies, she came upon a startling discovery: Men, even the smartest, most cynical and critical, generally prefer a blonde to a brunette.

The Walking Dead

March 9, 2009 Benjamin Bailey 0

There are things in life you can count on, that you know for sure you will have to deal with one day. Remember the famous saying, “Nothing is certain except death and taxes and the dead rising from their graves to feast on the living.”? Well, in order to prepare for the inevitable zombie holocaust, in between games of Left 4 Dead, read The Walking Dead.

March 9, 2009 TAMN of Seriously So Blessed 0

Hey Wolverina-spinsties, time to get your babe on and get a life! It’s me, Tiffany/Amber/Megan/Nicole, or TAMN, and bragging is a downer but honestly, I have the bEsT LifE eVeR and me and my hubbers, Jordan/Jason/Wes/Taylor (JJWT, or J-Dub, or Angelbabe) are what happily ever after looks like.

March 9, 2009 Rikki Carter 0

If boring weekends in the valley are getting you down and you are searching for new music to fill your soul, look no further than Provo’s own Velour. Local music talent is so alive and accessible in the area that there is no excuse for not getting out and seeing what Provo has to offer.

Spring trend spotted

March 9, 2009 Emily Maria Smith 0

If you thought the “2 legit to quit” craze was over now that the Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer concert has passed, think again! Much like the musician, hammer pants or Harem pants, are also attempting a comeback in women’s fashion this spring. The genie pant, as they are also known, was seen all over the recent New York Fashion Week and nearly every runway sported the trend.

The Lost and Damned

March 9, 2009 Jonathan Poole 0

While this generation of gaming has seen its fair share of innovation, there are two particular examples that should be considered definitive. One of these is the motion-sensing capabilities of Nintendo’s “Wii-mote”; at this point, that’s probably a no-brainer.

March 9, 2009 Mel Sundquist 0

In auditions last fall, seven young musicians were hand-picked by the Utah Valley Symphony to perform this week at the Covey Center for the Arts for the Symphony’s annual Young Artists Concert. The musicians, who range in age from nine to nineteen, will perform on piano, flute, cello, double bass, and viola.

The Show Must (Not) Go On

March 2, 2009 Matthew A. Jonassaint 0

The death of a theater production is arguably UVU’s best-kept secret controversy this month. Electra, which was slated for release in early March at the Provo Theater, was cancelled last week for suggestive sexual content. Electra is a classical Greek tragedy by Euripides about a brother and sister who are commanded by the gods to kill their mother.

Utah Valley Artists Absent at SLC Tattoo Convention

March 2, 2009 Loraine Gholdston 0

During the weekend of February 13- 15, Salt Lake City hosted its annual International Tattoo convention. The Salt Palace room buzzed like a nest of metal hornets as the artists set to work with their machines. Hundreds of people milled about to take in the myriad artist’s styles and original arts and crafts, and to get in line for a tattoo or piercing.

Get Your Rock and Roll On

March 2, 2009 Rikki Carter 0

Combing elements of Shakespearian comedy and Elvis songs may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the two blend together seamlessly in “All Shook Up,” the latest production from the Hale Center Theater in Orem. Set in the 1950s Midwest, amid the changing social climate and the dawning of Rock and Roll, a motorbike riding, guitar playing “roustabout” drives into town bringing with him a message of social tolerance and equality.
