Combing elements of Shakespearian comedy and Elvis songs may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the two blend together seamlessly in “All Shook Up,” the latest production from the Hale Center Theater in Orem.
Set in the 1950s Midwest, amid the changing social climate and the dawning of Rock and Roll, a motorbike riding, guitar playing “roustabout” drives into town bringing with him a message of social tolerance and equality.
True to the form of Shakespeare, this play is riddled with uncomfortable humor and awkward situations, played out beautifully by the talented lead characters. As a lovable tomboy, Natalie (Leslie Hart) disguises herself as a man in attempt to win the heart of the unattainable ‘hunk of burning love,’ Chad (Jared Young). All the while, the conservative Mayor, Matilda (Jackie Eaton) attempts to run the pelvis-thrusting Chad out of town before he can corrupt the youth into interracial dating and listening to *gasp* Rock and Roll music!
The capable cast is silly at appropriate times, but when the full ensemble is on stage the energy radiates into the laughing audience. Without a weak link to be spoken of, they come together well and create a great chemistry. They even manage to throw in a little Utah humor for good measure.
Narrated by classic Elvis hits such as, “Hound Dog”, “Jailhouse Rock” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” this tale of love triangles, mistaken identities, and cross-dressing is as much fun for the audience as it appears to be for the cast. The high energy company belts out songs of longing and love that will leave you humming the tunes in your head and tapping your blue suede shoes long after you have left the theater.
