Marcus Moore signs deal with Baltimore Orioles
Former Utah Valley pitcher Marcus Moore signed a deal on Thursday with the Baltimore Orioles and will begin his professional career in Sarasota, Florida as a member of the Gulf Coast League Orioles.
Moore, who finished with a school record 10 wins, a 2.86 ERA and 97 strikeouts, threw six complete games including two shutouts. He capped his career with a three-hit shutout at Hawai`i on May 17th.
“It caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting it,” said Moore. “It’s good to be chasing the dream. I’m excited to get out there and get to it.”
The Gulf Coast League is a rookie league based in Florida with 16 Major League affiliates.
Another former Utah Valley pitcher, Kam Mickolio, is also with the Baltimore Orioles. Mickolio is pitching at the double-A level in Bowie, Maryland and currently 2-1 with a 4.41 ERA in 25 appearances.
UVSC Rodeo Takes Top Honor in Bareback, Fifth Overall At College Nationals
UVSC’s Rodeo Team recently returned from an impressive showing at the 60th annual College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
Two members of the team placed in the top ten in the bareback event. UVSC sophomore Kaycee Feild from Elkridge, Utah, won first place and the National Championship prize and Colton Bair, from Benson, Utah, placed sixth. Feild and Carson Miles, from Mountain Home, Utah, finished 10th in the team roping event. Overall, the UVSC men’s team finished 5th in the nation.
“I was pretty excited that I won the event,” said Feild of his first-place win in bareback. “It was one of my goals I set for the year, and I achieved it.” Bareback is Feild’s favorite event to compete in, and he hopes to compete in the event in the National Finals Rodeo in December.
The UVSC Rodeo Team’s success was not only in high placements, though. Lana Bingham from Heber City, Utah, was awarded the Shane Drury Scholarship, which is awarded to a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) who has overcome adversity.
“I was very proud of the team members,” said Lewis Feild, coach of the UVSC Rodeo Team and member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. “When you’re competing nationally like that, it’s the toughest competition you can be up against. They all did really well.”
Women’s soccer team announces schedule
Utah Valley University women’s soccer coach Brent Anderson has announced the 2008 schedule that features eight home games and five United Soccer Conference (USC) regular season matches.
The Wolverines, who return all 11 starters from last season’s USC tournament champion squad, will play exhibition games against Dixie State and Weber State before opening the season with the University of North Dakota on August 30th at Clyde Field in Orem.
“It’s a good schedule that offers us some big challenges against some quality opponents,” said Anderson. “We have everybody back and we’ll build on that chemistry we gained last year and hopefully have a chance to repeat the success we had at the end of the season.”
UVU will play its first four contests at home before hitting the road for the first time at in-state rival Southern Utah on September 13th.
Anderson’s club will travel to Pocatello for the Idaho State classic and games against Wyoming and UC Davis on September 19th and 21st. The following week they’ll play New Mexico and Northern Arizona at NAU’s tournament.
From that point, UVU will begin conference play and its quest for a second consecutive USC championship. The Wolverines will play all three of its conference road games in a span of five days beginning with NJIT in New Jersey on October 8th. Then they will travel to Delaware to face both South Caroline State and Delaware State on October 10th and 12th.
UVU will then host its final three regular season games with a rematch of last season’s USC tournament finale against Longwood on October 17th. A home game against Howard on October 20th will wrap up USC season play before the Wolverines host Seattle on Senior Day on October 27th.
The top four USC teams from the regular season will then compete in the conference tournament in Farmville, Virginia on the campus of Longwood on November 1st and 3rd.
