Men’s Soccer Falls to #4 UC Irvine in Double Overtime

In their second match of the UNLV Rebel Classic the Utah Valley Wolverines faced off against No. 4 UC Irvine. The Sunday morning match was a nail bitter as it came down to the double over time play and ended in a 1-2 win for Irvine.

The teams played to a scoreless first half as the Wolverines proved once again that they can hold their own for the first 45 minutes against any team. This game marked the sixth game straight for UVU that where they left for half time without a score on the board for either team.

Just seven minutes into the second half Matt Gay kicked his second goal for the weekend and fifth of the year. The goal came to Gay as a penalty kick which game about when Sylar Milne took the ball into the box and was grabbed by a UC Irvine defender. With the 52nd-minute goal the score became 1-0 UVU.

From there the Wolverines kept hold of their lead for 30 minutes before Gor Kirakosyan snagged the equalizer in the 80th minute. The goal was made off an expertly redirected pass from Cameron Iwasa.

After the first overtime ended scoreless, Eduardo Calzada buried the ball off a long entry pass surprising UVU’s Collin Partee in the 103rd minute of play. The goal brought the score to 1-2 and won the game for the Anteaters.

The match marks the final non-conference game of the inaugural season for the gentlemen Wolverines. The team will now travel home to Clyde Field to open their Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 4th at 7:00p.m. MT.
