Rookie league racks up the fun
The sun slopes behind Brent Brown Ballpark, casting a shadow over the freshly-manicured baseball diamond nearly every night during the dog days of summer in Utah Valley. The product on the field consists of tomorrow’s Major League Baseball stars today and provides a unique opportunity to spend time with family and friends.
The Orem Owlz are the rookie league affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels and play their home games on campus at UVU. Fans fill the stadium 38 times during the regular season to bask in America’s pastime, enjoying the beautiful stadium and foot-long hot dogs. Not only is the ambiance awe-inspiring for baseball fans but also the family-friendly environment is suitable for everyone.
The quality of baseball on the field has Owlz fans reeling as Orem comes off its fourth Pioneer League Championship in the last six years. The Owlz will begin defense of their title on June 21 when they begin play against the Idaho Falls Chukars.
Last season, Orem cruised to the Pioneer League Title after a mediocre first half of the season. After team leader Jean Segura went down with an injured hand, Orem reeled off 15 wins in a row, setting the stage for the championship finish.
The Owlz were paced by Pioneer League batting champion Dillon Baird throughout the season and as they made their historical 15-game win streak. Skipper Tom Kotchman has managed in the Angels system for 26 years and will be back to lead Orem in 2010.
Owlz fans have grown accustomed to cheering on a winning team and this summer should be no different. Orem’s roster will consist of professional players drafted by the Angels with hopes of making it to the Major Leagues. There’s no better way to spend your warm summer nights than at the ballpark, cheering on these young pros with your glove in hand, hoping to catch a foul ball.
