For UVU students looking for chances at leadership, the Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL) provides the opportunities to do so. CAL, directed by Dr. Bruce Jackson, is a leading organization in the study of youth and adult leadership development.
“This program allows students to stand out in their desired major and become sought after in their careers,” said leadership graduate Natalie Miner, 22, an English major.
CAL was designed to advance leadership education and training for students of all ages. While many universities seek to provide leadership education for various academic departments on campus, very few seek to spread leadership throughout their communities.
CAL directly engages students in their communities through its involvement with the Know Greater Heroes Program that focuses on Kindergarten-6th grade, the Why Try Program which serves local junior high schools, the Concurrent Enrollment program and the Annual Leadership Conference which serves more than 4,000 high school students every year.
By supporting these programs, CAL helps pilot students to eventual participation in leadership certification at the college level.
The Center also holds a Mastermind Lecture from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Monday of every month in SC206B. This lecture series is dedicated to bring students into the worlds of exceptional leadership keynote speakers such as Jack Christensen, Vice President of UVU; Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert of Utah; and the program’s director, Dr. Bruce Jackson.
Through participation in CAL, students can enhance their majors by achieving leadership certification, earning a degree in integrated studies and receiving scholarships through leadership demonstration.
“When you open your heart to others, and help create the success for all, you’ve found the key to leadership. That is what the CAL is all about,” said Melissa Iketau, 18, current leadership student.
Many students have come out of CAL with better leadership skills that help them with their education and future careers.
