Whether using a solo instrument, singing a capella or performing in a full ensemble, music has respectfully been referred to as the universal language because of its ability to sway the mood of audiences.

UVenue, formally known as Café Night and sponsored by UVUSA, has provided an opportunity for student to showcase their musical talents for the past 2 years.

Cori Fox, chair of the fine arts department for UVUSA is in charge of making these UVenue events happen. “The idea Alesha Watkins, Student Government Fine Arts Chair at the time, originally came up with was for students to have an environment where they can relax and are able to creatively express themselves,” Fox said.

According to Fox, there has been a change each year since it began. All performances in 2009 took place on center stage. In 2010 the opening event moved into the courtyard to take advantage of the beautiful weather. Following last year’s trend, this year’s opening night is scheduled in the courtyard on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Since Battle of The Bands will not be taking place this semester, student government has decided to turn UVenue into a series of competitions.  This means, unlike the Café Nights of previous years, poetry reading is no longer accepted.

Eight bands will compete each night. The winning band from each night, four in all, will perform one final night sometime in March. The winner will be award a $500 prize. According to Fox, student government is implementing these changes in hopes of attracting an audience for these student musicians working in bands, or as a solo artist, that would have participated in BOTB. “We want to be able to make each events worth attending. With so many activities and diverse schedules of students we found we can only do that if we are able to give each occasion the attention they deserve to make it a successful experience,” Fox said.

Those interested can sign up at the student government offices in SC 105. Sign-ups are on a first-come, first serve basis.
