Wolverines lose nail-biter at SUU, extend losing streak to four

Following their first home game since Nov. 21, the Utah Valley men’s basketball team hit the road again to face Southern Utah on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Cedar City, Utah. UVU entered the game having played five of the last seven games on the road and the fatigue showed as they fell to the Thunderbirds 73-72.

The Utah Valley University women’s basketball team defeated the University of Antelope Valley 77-61 on Saturday, Nov. 30 at home in the UCCU Center. This was the Wolverines first victory of the short season, snapping their five-game losing streak.

The Utah Valley men’s basketball team lost 64-61 to the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in Emmitsburg, Maryland on Tuesday night, Nov. 26. Despite leading for the majority of the game, the Wolverines went without a field goal in the final two and a half minutes to allow a late comeback by the Mountaineers.

Utah Valley University put up a fight against the No. 4 ranked team in the nation, the University of Wisconsin. The Wolverines fell 31-13 overall as a team. The premier match of the day featured sophomore Tate Orndorff of UVU ranked No. 3, taking on fellow sophomore Trent Hillger of UW ranked No. 2. Hillger would ultimately end up taking home the victory.

Utah Valley University had no problem at all advancing past the quarterfinals in the opening round of the WAC tournament on Thursday, Nov. 21, defeating the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 3-0 to clinch a spot in Friday’s semifinal matchup.

Despite usually being hesitant to jump to conclusions, I have to say: Utah Valley’s men’s basketball team is looking like they have the potential to be very special this season. I know that I am basing this claim off of a sample size of five games, but being able to compete with Kentucky, and almost win, at Rupp Arena isn’t something I think anyone expected when the season began. Although UVU lost 82-74, observers could see that UVU competed at a much higher level than expected and gave UK a pretty good scare.

Utah Valley men’s soccer saw their 2019 season extended by at least one more match on Friday, Nov. 15, against Air Force Academy because of penalty kicks. But had their season come to a close on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, against Seattle University due to penalty kicks. The Redhawks then earned the WAC title and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

The Utah Valley volleyball team struggled to get things going on the road once again as they fell on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the hands of California Baptist University 3-1, which was the sixth loss in eight games for the green and white.

It seems that this years cross country season has gone by faster than Utah Valley’s teams can run. Both UVU’s men’s and women’s teams concluded their season Friday, Nov. 15, placing seventh and 13th respectively. The Mountain Region Cross Country Championships took place just over the mountain at Rose Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City, and brought some of the best teams in the nation together to compete for a chance at the NCAA championships Nov. 23.

In penalty kicks, it came down to who was going to miss first after five shots each. Jensen came up with another huge save to give UVU a chance to win the match with just one more goal. The goal-scoring hero ended up being sophomore forward Zahir Vazquez.
