A native of Tucson, Arizona, senior guard Alexis Cortez played a critical role in the success of the Utah Valley women’s basketball team this past year. The self-described “quiet leader” set an example of consistency and steady improvement during her three years at UVU. She helped lead the team to a 9-6 conference record her senior year — the third-best record in the Western Athletic Conference.
Spring sports have been shut down on campus, as well as across the nation, because of COVID-19. But, it’s still worthwhile to reflect upon what defined the seasons of some winter and spring sports. In this week’s column, we will be looking at a record-breaking statistic for men’s basketball, the number of blowout wins by the softball team, and an astronomical earned run average allowed by the baseball team.
Friday, March 6, 2020. That is a date that is lamented in Utah Valley athletics history, marking the first perfect game ever recorded in UVU softball history. The Wolverines beat Northern Colorado 9-0 in an all-around team effort highlighted by sophomore pitcher Brooke Carter’s record-setting performance.
