What to expect in 2008

As another school year rolls around, most sports’ fans turn their attention to collegiate sports, and while UVU is in its first year as a university, the athletic teams have been competing against other universities at the Division I level for several years. As another school year rolls around, most sports’ fans turn their attention to collegiate sports, and while UVU is in its first year as a university, the athletic teams have been competing against other universities at the Division I level for several years. Not only has UVU held its own in D-I competition, but has left several universities known for their athletic teams with their tails between their legs.

The sports that will kick things off for the Wolverines in the fall will be the women’s soccer team, winners of the United Soccer Conference tournament last season, and the women’s volleyball team, which enjoyed its best season last year. The cross-country teams will begin their run at another successful season as well. Without a football team to cheer on in the fall, these teams have proven worthy of student support.

In 2007 UVU soccer standout Jenni Clough became the all-time leading goal scorer to don a Wolverine uniform. She scored eight goals last season and will look to improve on that mark in 2008. The Wolverines on the court aren’t lacking in star power either as they collectively found a way to win more than 20 matches last year.

Whether you prefer men’s hoops or women’s both will put on an exciting show this season. Two of the best players in the nation will be suiting up for UVU as they each enter their senior seasons. Ryan Toolson for the men’s team averaged nearly 24 points a game last year, while post-player sensation Robyn Fairbanks will look to have another All-American season as her team will aim to surpass last year’s 16 wins.

As part of becoming a university, and with the influx in school pride, it’s time to support our university’s athletic program and fill the seats.
