It is the good old adage of you win some and you lose some.  For the UVU athletic teams, that was the case on Saturday afternoon.

The UVU volleyball team hosted regular season champion New Mexico State in the regular season finale.  After set one went back and forth, New Mexico State turned the pressure up and bit and won the next two sets handily to sweep the match.  UVU will enter next week’s WAC volleyball tournament as the No. 3 seed after finishing in a tie for second with CSU Bakersfield.  They will take on UTRGV on Thursday night in a quarterfinal match where they lost in five sets to Seattle University last season.MBBvsBYU-8797

The historic run for the UVU women’s soccer team came to an end with a 1-0 loss at cross-county foe BYU on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  BYU scored the lone goal in the 21st minute when Elene Medeiros hot a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.  It was the final game for seniors Kasandra Anderson, Jessica Duffin, Jamie Brown, Kali Stubbs, and Courtney Wilson. The women’s soccer team won their first WAC championship and it was the first time in program history they competed in the NCAA Tournament.

Rebecca MaWhinney scored a career-high 23 points to help the UVU women’s basketball team win their home-opener 91-54 on Saturday afternoon against Bethesda University. The win comes less than 24 hours after losing their season-opener against BYU.  Georgia Agnew tied her career-high with 12 assists.  Sam Loggins and Mariah Seals scored 12 points each for UVU who used a 14-2 run to end the second quarter and take a 50-32 lead into the half.

The new era for the UVU men’s basketball team under Mark Pope got their first win of the season 89-60 over Great Falls on Saturday evening at the UCCU Center.  After a slow start to their home opener, the UVU men got the offense going thanks to Konner Frey and Marcel Davis, who had 17 and 15 points, respectively. Ivory Young, Telly Davenport, and Darrious Hamilton were also in double figures.  Perhaps the best play of the night and a statement for the weekend for the Wolverines was when Telly Davenport threw down and alley-oop dunk on a pass from Cory Cardwell. MBBvsBYU-8599

There is one more match left on the weekend for UVU athletics and it is a big one.  The UVU men’s soccer team will take on Seattle for the WAC championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

Many people will say that losing to BYU and the struggles that UVU had in those games would be considered a bad weekend.  But what people don’t understand is that the way UVU has competed and wanted to play bigger schools and have an impact on the community is has been a major boost to the fanbase and the pride of the school.
