Varney, Flanary bring home GWC,
PCSC weekly honors
Utah Valley’s Shaylyn Varney was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference and Great West Conference Softball Player of the Week and teammate Kyli Flanary was named the PCSC and GWC Pitcher of the Week for their outstanding play at last weekend’s GWC Softball Cluster. The awards were announced Tuesday by the league office.
Varney, a senior catcher from Ogden, Utah, posted a .500 batting average as the Wolverines went 5-1 in the GWC event, which gives them the top seed at the GWC Championships in May. She hit .666 in three of the six games, including two home runs and four RBI versus preseason favorite South Dakota. Varney currently leads the Wolverines in hitting at .432 and is tied for second in homers (2) and is second in RBIs (14). Flanary recorded a 3-0 record with a 0.93 ERA while not allowing a wild pitch or hit batter. The junior from Bountiful, Utah has a team-best five wins and a team-best 3.32 ERA on the season.
Nothum shatters
school record at
Stanford Invitational
Utah Valley junior Mary Nothum shattered the 5000-meter run school record Friday night at the 2010 Stanford Invitational. The meet features some of the top high school and collegiate talents from around the nation as well as a few pros.
Nothum placed second overall in her section of the 5000m race, finishing the distance run with an impressive time of 17:00.41. The new record beats the previous one by more than 30 seconds.
Also competing for UVU at the meet was senior Jacob Buhler and sophomore Tim Rowberry. Rowberry competed in the 800-meter run and placed tenth overall with a solid time of 1:51.37, a mere second off of the school record. Buhler also competed in the 5000m run as he placed 24th with a time of 14:54.83. He also finished only a few seconds behind men’s school record in the event.
