Like it or not, Old Man Winter has decided to stay his entrance this year. We don’t know the reason for this delay, but we do know that UDOT crews are taking full advantage of it. The I-15 CORE project is moving along swiftly, as are other projects close to home.
While traffic through the University Parkway intersection at Sandhill road is being shifted north for the first phase of the continuous flow intersection and pedestrian undercrossing, northbound lanes from Sandhill into the intersection will be closed for the installation of a storm drain. The lane closure is expected to last from Jan. 8 until Jan. 13. Northbound drivers are encouraged to use 1430 South to 400 West as an alternate route to access University Parkway.
According to UDOT Public Relations Manager Leigh Dethman, all of the commotion at this intersection is part of an effort to “enhance safety and improve mobility.” It makes sense that such efforts are being made here – not just because it’s where the largest university in the state sits, but also because it is the second-busiest intersection in the state of Utah.
Orem 800 North will also be closed at I-15 from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Jan. 4-12. Crews will be removing old bridge supports and no traffic will be allowed eastbound or westbound under the freeway.
The snow may not be here yet, but history tells us that it is sure to come. UDOT urges drivers to “know before you go,” and has made a wide variety of tools to use to stay aware of traffic conditions. Visit www.udot.utah.gov for details.
