Car fire erupts in the parking lot of the UVU library

Around 5:30 p.m. a car fire erupted in parking lot L4 on the north side of UVU campus near the library.

The flames originated from a Pontiac Grand Prix and spread to the four surrounding vehicles according to Kevin Kemp of the Orem City Fire Department.

“The smoke started coming out of the hood…and then flames shot out of it,” said Chanel Carlson, a student at UVU who witnessed the beginning of the fire after having parked just six cars down from the Pontiac.

There was no one in the cars at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

At the time there were no leads as to the cause of the fire, only that it originated from the Pontiac. The Fire Department hadn’t ruled out that the fire was intentional but considered it unlikely.

None of the vehicles’ owners were present at the time of the fire or during the aftermath. As of 6:30 p.m. none of the owners had arrived at the scene.

Lot L4, where the fire occurred is listed as faculty parking, but after 4 p.m. students are allowed to park. Presumably, they’ll be able to locate the owners by the license plates, the numbers being registered with the school to have a parking pass.

At the time there was other unconfirmed damage to at least three other vehicles in addition to the five that were totaled.
